On April 1, boys varsity tennis won a crushing victory over the Huntington Beach Oilers with a final score of 15-3. The first home game  of the season redeemed the boys from their previous, 6-12, defeat against top contenders, Los Alamitos.

Eric Nguyen (‘16) and Winston Ngo (‘14) won all three of their singles matches with Nguyen never relenting more than one game to his opponent. He won 6-0, 6-1, and 6-1. Doubles teams Parker Braverman (‘15) and Darrin Nguyen (‘14) also won all of their matches along with Johnny Luu (‘15) and Brandon Nguyen (‘15).

“We definitely focused a lot in doubles, changed the doubles drills, and a lot of fitness. Those are two things we changed from the last game to make this work,” said head coach Harshul Patel.

With their big win, the Barons hope to continue their streak throughout the season even with two players sitting out. Previous singles player John Lieu (‘14) did not play this match along with Darren Dinh (‘14). Lieu was out due to an ankle injury.

“Coach is making sure I really do heal my ankle. Next match I’ll probably be playing and the big one against Los Al,” stated Lieu. “I’m in the weight room a lot now and just making sure I stay off my ankle as much as I can. “

Despite the slight disadvantage, two JV players stepped up and pulled through. The boys will continue to work until their next home game against Marina on April 8.
