Girls varsity volleyball plays hard in Summer League

by Demetria Ma

During the month of July, girls varsity volleyball warmed up for the fall season by participating in the Summer League games that were held every Tuesday and Thursday.

Although the team suffered multiple losses, the additional competition time allowed the girls to become more familiar with each other.

“It really brought us closer as a team and has showed each of us what our strengths are and what we need to work on as a team,” said Lina Thatsanaphonh (’15).

Despite their rocky start, the Lady Barons developed more consistent playing by the end of Summer League.

Ari Jacobsen (’15) and Noelle Hillman (’15) both contributed their great passing skills to every game, while Lina Thatsanaphonh (’15) made several kills and led the team on many serving runs.

This was the first year that the girls participated in Summer League since Adam Cutrell took over as head coach last year.

“I wanted to participate in Summer League last year, we just didn’t have the time because I just got the position [as head coach],” said Cutrell. “So I’m very thankful that we had the opportunity to do that this year.”

“I always love this time of year because we’re gone—out with the old and in with the new—and it gives a lot of our kids that are up-and-coming the opportunities that they hadn’t had previously,” he continued. “You get to see them in action, and I thought it went well; I thought it went as expected. I’m really excited for this upcoming year.”
