In Barons field hockey’s third game of the season last Tuesday, the girls swing another loss, 0-4. FV has been looking at a tough start to season, 0-3, after handling 1-3-1 in preseason.

The Lady Barons started off slow, allowing the Chargers to score 0-1 within the first three minutes, and making Varsity coach Allison Renth call a time-out. After that, the game picked up speed as the ball traveled up and down the field. Midfields Carmen Garcia (‘13) and Sophia Rivera (‘13) made key connections and passes that pushed the game onto Edison’s half of the field. By the end of the half, the score was 0-2.

Edison scored another goal minutes after the half began, but goalie Ryann Callaghan (‘15) and the defensive line kept out another goal for the most of the second half.

“Sometimes we start off slow, but that’s okay. It was a tough game but the girls worked very well as a team and unfortunately we couldn’t beat Edison, but we had fun,” stated Callaghan.

Forward and defensive player Cara Troutman (‘15) played hard, crossing multiple shots to goal, though none entered. With a short corner in progress in the penultimate minute of the game, a defenseman was removed from the play for an early-start call. This gave Edison the edge to score another goal within the last minute. The final score as the buzzer cut was 0-4.

Earlier last week, FV lost to both Newport Harbor and HB, 0-1 and 0-7 respectively. Field hockey has their next home game against the Westminster Lions on Wednesday, October 8 at 3:15 p.m.
