Boys volleyball faced the Huntington Beach Oilers in their last home game of the season on Friday, May 1.

Both teams gave it their all, but the Barons unfortunately lost 0-3, scoring 12-25, 18-25, and 16-25.

Not only was this the last home game of the season, but it was also Senior Night. Seniors Jonathan Vy(15′), Cory Bennett(15′), Hunter Todd(15′), and Luke Jacobsen(15′) were escorted across the floor by their families as they were presented one by one.

“Senior night was amazing tonight and it is bittersweet because the class of 2015 is being honored but at the same time, it is the last time ever we will play in Paul Berger Gymnasium,” said Jacobsen. “But I’m happy that we played HB for Senior Night because they have an Olympian in their team and not everyone can say they played an Olympic athlete on Senior Night!”

Throughout the game, the varsity team maintained a high level of energy in order to keep up with the fast, hard-driven balls that came from the Oilers’ side. Huntington had several star players that kept the fire fueled with their intensity, keeping the Barons on their toes in all three games.

“I think we showed a great deal of competitiveness with the first place team in Sunset League. We played hard with them both matches and at the end it came down to which team gave up too many free points. Our untimely errors ended up giving them a few points late in the game,” said varsity assistant coach Dillon Emery.

Front-row players, including Todd, Brandon Crowe (’18), and Will Thibodeau (’16) scored key points for the Barons by saving the ball with their strong blocking and clean hits.

Despite the unanticipated strength of the Oilers, the back row ran down every down-ball and made great efforts to keep the ball in play. In game 2, libero Jacobsen saved a ball, making a graceful assist with an unexpected backset to the outside.

Unfortunately, many more points were lost at the back line with several service errors that fell short and landed the ball in the net.

“I’m disappointed that we aren’t making playoffs this year because I felt like with this team we could have went 6-4 in league and locked up that third guaranteed bid for CIF, but it happens,” Jacobsen remarked. “We are a very young team with a lot of experience returning for next year and years to come and I can’t wait to come back and visit some of my old teammates tear it up on the court next year.”
