The Fountain Valley girls’ varsity basketball team lost against Newport Harbor in a suspenseful game.

Following the loss from Huntington Beach on Tuesday, the Barons fell behind the Sailors with a score of 29-42. Compared to the game against the Huntington Beach Oilers, the girls definitely showed a better performance against Newport Harbor.

In the first quarter, both teams attempted to score, but missed many shots, ending the quarter with a score of 5-10.

Right into the second quarter, Varsity Team Captain Ruth Nguyen (‘16) scored a three-pointer and from then on, both sides failed to score major points. With quick interceptions and turnovers from Newport, the Sailors quickly took a huge lead with 11-27. The second quarter ended with the score of 12-29.

The third quarter began with a successful free throw by Varsity Team Captain Kayleen Amimoto (‘16). With her quick plays, she made another basket, bringing up the score. Although the Barons played their best to make more shots, they weren’t able to close the gap between their scores. The quarter ended with 19-38.

“I was disappointed because I couldn’t make some of my shots I should’ve made.” said player Hope Nguyen (‘18).

The fourth quarter began well for the Barons, and within ten seconds, they were able to make a shot. With a steal from the Sailors and a great play by Ruth Nguyen, the girls brought up the score to 25-38.

Unfortunately for Fountain Valley, the girls ended with a final score of 29-42.

“We put up a good fight. It was tough putting up our shots. A lot of our shots weren’t going in, but we always come out fighting,” Amimoto (‘16) said. “I think we can work on boxing out and rebounding. We’re not a tall team; we’re really small compared to everybody else in Sunset. And then working together as a team.”

Hope Nguyen said she believed that their game against Los Alamitos next week was going to be a tough game, but they’re doing all they can to prepare.
