Senior Varsity Tennis Captains Andrew Nguyen (‘16) and Eric Nguyen (‘16) became the Doubles Sunset League Champions on May 5 at Huntington Beach High School.

They played against Lee and Schafer from Newport Harbor High School in the doubles final round, winning two out of three matches. Their scores from the first two matches were 3-6 and 6-0, winning one and losing one, before managing to pull through and win the last match with a tie breaker at 10-8.

“Andrew and Eric have made history this season by winning the Doubles Sunset League Champions title after more than 25 years of FVHS,” Varsity Tennis Coach Harshul Patel said.

According to Patel, these two worked very hard day in and day out for the past four years. Their goal in the beginning of season was to win the title and their “work ethic and disciplined efforts” finally paid off.

“It’s a pretty amazing experience since I’ve been trying to win the title for the past four years and it finally came true,” Eric Nguyen, who has been on varsity all four years, said.

Andrew began playing tennis in sixth grade and moved to Fountain Valley High School from Segerstrom High School his sophomore year to play competitive tennis. Tennis was an alternative to ping pong after his former ping pong coach moved away.

“I felt like it was fate. I moved to Fountain Valley the year we won, along with our teammate Darren Dinh from Huntington Beach. All of this happening really contributed to our success,” Andrew Nguyen said.

Andrew Nguyen was thrilled on their victory at Sunset League Finals.

“All the hard work these past few years really paid off. Eric and I winning league finals was really exciting and gratifying. We pushed through a hard first day at league finals, barely winning against the freshmen at Huntington Beach, but we pushed on to clutch victory!” Andrew Nguyen said.

Patel was incredibly proud of their achievement in winning the Varsity Doubles Sunset League. He is ready for the next step at CIF Individuals.

“We are off to CIF individuals in a week. They are ready for their matches,” Patel said. “I am very proud of the Team Nguyen.”
