Art for Hearts is a club co-founded by Sarah Kwok (‘18) and Britney Lam (‘18) with the purpose of serving the community, particularly in art-related events. After having recruited 12 to 20 regular members for their new club last year, the two have high hopes as to what they’ll be able to do this year with their incoming new members.

Regarding Arts for Hearts’s overall mission, Kwok said, “Our ultimate goal is to give members a chance to participate in unique volunteering events that are different from your standard event. We want to provide members with fun opportunities to complete their volunteer hours or have fun with their friends while giving back to the community.”

Kwok and Lam were inspired to create Arts for Hearts when looking to join a club that would spread happiness to kids and the community in the form of imagination and creativity, which they didn’t find in any other club on campus. Once the two officiated their club last year, Arts for Hearts adopted a vision of incorporating art into their service.

They search for events with artistic components to volunteer at, such as the FV Tree Lighting, the Westminster Spring Fest and the Westminster SHUE Program. In the future, they plan to craft blankets for foster children and set up arts and crafts booths for children at community events.

“We hope that this year our club will be able to make a difference in the community by showing our love through the arts,” said Kwok.

To kick off the new school year, Arts for Hearts will conduct a social in order to warm up to the new members. For those interested in joining Arts for Hearts, the club meets every Friday during lunch at B15, and their first meeting will be on Sept. 23.

The co-presidents often see that students wanting to join their club have the misconception of needing to be artistic experts, but Kwok and Lam are quick to assure them that this kind of thought is far from the truth.

We want to recruit people who love volunteering, want fun events to go to this year, want to make friends and memories through high school and like art,” Kwok said. “However, it you aren’t artsy, that’s completely fine because we can teach you.”

Similarly, Lam said, “You don’t need to be artistic or anything. Come and join, help around the community and spread the joy that art brings.”
