On Friday Sept. 7 the girls volleyball team went up against Los Alamitos High School with a loss of 1-3.

In the first set, Fountain Valley made the first point but Los Alamitos brought the score back up 1-6. No. 4 Phoebe Minch (’20) made great saves and spikes for her team, but the girls were still behind a few points despite their undeniable teamwork. They ended the set with a score of 13-25, Los Alamitos in the lead.

Los Alamitos may have gotten the first point in the second set, but the ladies brought the score up to 4-1. Fountain Valley had some nice rallies, but both teams were scoring points back and forth. The set was won by Los Al 19-25.

In the third set, points were being scored back and forth, but the Lady Barons hit the twenty mark first. No. 4 Phoebe Minch (’20) and No. 77 Amy Hinnant (‘17) were making powerful spikes throughout the set. With the help of their libero No. 20 Britney Tran (’17), they were able to keep great defense and kept the score close.  The girls won the set 25-23.

“I think we could have played a lot better. But we fought really hard through the third set and won that one. But we’re going to come back and show them what we got,” said Tran.

In the final set, the Lady Barons were in the lead, with scores of 7-3 and 9-5. But when Fountain Valley made a spike, the referees began to double check if the point was in or  not. The final decision took a few minutes, but the crowd began to become impatient. The referees took Fountain Valley’s point away and gave it to Los Al changing the score from 10-5 to 9-6, conjuring up some angry supporters. The girls defended and made as many spikes they could, but lost the game 22-25. Great blocking was done by Kennedy Hood (’17) with seven blocks and by Rilyn Todd (’17) with four blocks. The kill leader of the game was Phoebe Minch (’20) with a total of fourteen kills.

Even though many people came out to cheer on our Barons girls volleyball, our loud crowd was still out-cheered by Los Alamitos junior varsity and freshmen team because most of our fans had left by the third game.
