Fountain Valley High School’s varsity girls volleyball went up against the Marina Vikings on Thursday, October 13 and came out victorious.

The Barons had a rough start and lost the first game 23-25. Despite their four aces in the first game, the Vikings were able to capitalize off of their unreactive defense and low energy level to take the win.

Game two was also a nail-biter, but the Barons managed to come out on top due to the five aces and many errors made by Marina. Key plays were made by Amy Hinnant (‘17) and Brittney Tran (‘17) as they blocked and dug the Vikings every time they hit.

The third game was even closer, with the Barons being down 20-23 at the end of the game. The Barons however, were not shaken by the score and were able to clutch out the game 25-23 with key serves by Serena Hom (‘20) and a very important momentum-swinging dig by Britney Tran (‘17).

In the fourth and final game, Erin Finley (‘17) played her hardest and her passing and hitting was on point, so the Barons were able to win 25-23. Finley had nine kills and stood out as one of the best passers of the night.

“We made a lot of hitting errors and had bad serve receive passing, but our energy level was high and our blocking was good as well,” said Finley after the game.

The Barons are now 3-4 in league, with their last home game against Huntington on Tuesday, October 18.

“Last set, I thought it was nice. But I thought we could’ve been stronger towards the beginning and the middle part of the set. But I’m glad our girls were resilient and came back towards the end of the set,” said Coach Olbright.
