On a rainy Monday afternoon, the Barons varsity girls tennis team faced Los Alamitos in their last season match with a score of 7-11. This game determined if the team won first in the Sunset League for the first time in 25 years, but the girls fell short by a couple of games to reach that goal.

Even 2nd place was a great achievement for the girls tennis team this year.

“Our performance was unexpected. With changes in lineup and new varsity members, I didn’t think we were able to get this far,” said doubles player Aozora Ito (‘18).

Notable players throughout the game was singles player Hanh Pham (‘18) winning all three of her sets and doubles team Clarissa Htay (‘17) and Vikki Nguyen (‘18) winning two out of three sets for the team. Doubles teams Briana Lau (‘17) and Ito along with Kayla Korhonen (‘17) and Jane Nguyen (‘17) each contributed one set to the team.

Singles players Katie Ho (‘17), Charisse Vu (‘19), and Sharon Chen (‘18) all fought hard to win games but fell short in a couple of games. All three players put in a lot of fight against Los Alamitos to make an effort to help the team.

“The main challenge today for the team’s performance was the nervousness that we all had and pulling through till the end. At some times during the match today, we could all feel the pressure in the air which also made it challenging. But we still ended the season with a good record and having a lot of fun with each other throughout the season,” said Senior Captain Ho.

With 2nd place in the Sunset League, the FVHS girls tennis team’s journey is not over yet. They have won a spot in the CIF playoffs and have Sunset League individuals coming up on Wednesday and Thursday at the FVHS tennis courts.

“I think the biggest achievement was coming together as one team. With girls come drama and whatnot, but I think everyone on out team felt united towards the end of the season. I love the tennis team so so much,” said Ito.
