On Tuesday, Dec. 13, Fountain Valley High School [FVHS] orchestra and band will be having their winter concert. Expect to hear winter season classics performed by the Baron musicians.

Tickets are free, but they ask that people bring a canned food item in place of money for a ticket to support the effort around the school to help families that don’t have food for the Christmas season.

Orchestra and band instructor Matthew Matthews said, “[Orchestra] did a performance two weeks ago at California Adventure, got to display their skills and they received lots of positive comments about that.”

Matthews is confident about the band and orchestra’s performance thus far and is hoping to make this concert just as good if not better than the last.

Something new this year for the Winter Concert is that they will be holding a raffle for any aspiring conductors to conduct the performance of Lee Roy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”.

“We have a raffle this year for conducting the band and orchestra. The last piece we have done traditionally is Lee Roy Anderson’s ‘Sleigh Ride’ which is one of the most popular holiday tunes of all time…This year we are going to raffle off the opportunity to conduct that piece, so if you desire to be a conductor come and throw your hat in the bucket,” said Matthews.

Along with having another memorable performance for all parents and students to enjoy for the holiday season, they are hoping that they can aid as many families in need as possible through the canned food drive inspired by Joanna Jones, ceramics teacher.

Matthews said, “The tickets are free of cost, but we ask that you bring a canned food item just to help out those in need, and that’s what this season is all about.”
