Everyone has seen the blue recycling bins placed in all the classrooms, but students are still placing their empty (and full) water bottles in the trash. Ecology club is taking the reigns of the recycling program at school and hoping to make a change.

“Our goal is to get every single classroom with a recycling bin so students aren’t tossing bottles and papers in the trash cans and so we can get everyone to be recycling and be more environmentally friendly,” said Co-president Jane Liu (‘18).

A few months ago, Ecology club started to collect medium sized cardboard boxes and decorate them into recycling boxes. Their plan is to spread awareness around the school about recycling and keep both the campus and environment as clean as possible. The decorated recycling boxes were then distributed around classes early January and were collected last Friday.

Many of the boxes collected were halfway full with empty bottles, but there were some trash, such as used tissues and food wrappers, in a few of the boxes. Nonetheless, some teachers are taking advantage of this program and bringing in their own bottles to help fill up the recycling boxes.

This new change is here to stay and Ecology club encourages everyone to participate in this new recycling program and help the Earth.

“We’re hoping to educate more students about the importance of recycling and we also hope that with more boxes around, students will be more inclined to recycle and be a part of society that will help the Earth,” said President Vian Nguyen (‘17).
