Baron Banner Successful at OCJEA

The Orange County Journalism Education Association, commonly known as OCJEA, hosts a yearly competition for all high school students in Orange County. Taking place at Fullerton College, students compete in their respective categories: news, novice news, feature, sports, editorial, editorial cartoon, critical review, news photography, yearbook photography, newspaper layout, yearbook copy and yearbook design.

The Baron Banner news crew swept up over 20 awards in the competition. Here are the following results from the team.

News: 9th- Steve Phan (‘17)

Novice news: Superior- Isabella Purdy (‘20),  Excellent- Vivian Le (‘19), Elise Tran (‘20),  Honorable Mention- Suzane Jlelati (‘18), Kaitlyn Ngo (‘18), Anju Ito (‘19)

Feature: 9th- Caitlin Pham (‘17), 4th- Cecilia Nguyen (‘19)

Sports: 6th- Olivia Krueger (‘19), 4th- Trevor Sonoda (‘17)

Critical Review: 2nd- Ally Lenguyen (‘17)

Editorial Cartoon: 6th- Kaylee Johnson (‘17), 2nd- Khang Do (‘18)

News Photography: 4th- John Le (‘20), 3rd- Jake Winkle (‘17)

Yearbook Photography: 10th-  Laura Le (‘18), 5th- Sandra On (‘17)

Newspaper Layout: 8th- Ivy Duong (‘19), 2nd- Cayla Nguyen (‘19)

“I felt really happy and surprised that I even placed. As I was getting my award, I could hear all my friends cheering for me even though I only placed 8th. I was proud of myself for being able to placed despite the amount of time I had to practice,” said Ivy Duong (‘19).

In addition, the team took 5th in Best of Show division two and 5th in Best of Show online. Congratulations to those moving on to the Southern California Journalism Education Association (SCJEA) competition!
