On March 21, in the first Sunset League swim meet of the year, Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) girls varsity swim team splashed away Edison High School (EHS) with a score of 104-66. The boys varsity swim team were neck and neck with Edison but in the end, EHS prevailed with a close score of 86-84.

Some of the highlights of the meet includes the girls 200 yard medley relay, Hannah Farrow (‘19), Abigail Nelson (‘18), Shayla Erickson (‘18) and Carly Perri (‘17) sprinted each of their strokes and were ahead throughout the whole race earning an impressive 1:49.72.

Farrow finished with a 2:07.07, a CIF auto time, in the 200 individual medley. It was too close to call during the race between Farrow and an Edison swimmer throughout all four strokes until the last couple meters when Farrow pushed ahead putting her in first.

FVHS dusted Edison with a full sweep in the boys varsity 50 freestyle. Justin Nguyen (‘17) swam a :21.77 earning him first. In second place, Anthony Pham (‘17) got a :23.62 and right behind him Adam Mancini (‘17) got a :23.73.

“As a team, we did really well. Boys varsity came within two points of beating Edison. That’s really good for us and girls won by a landslide,” said swim team captain Austin Gergens (‘17). “So we’re really proud of our girls and next time going forward we’re just going to put more effort into practices and just show up more as a team but we had a lot of team spirit. So, I was very proud of us.”

With the season just starting, it allows all of the swimmers plenty of time to improve on their swim times and techniques.

“We had a really good race. Everybody swam really well and I feel like we’ve been doing everything that we’ve been practicing in practice and executing on that,” said Kyle Naumann, the varsity head coach. “Things we can improve on [is] we need to work on our depth. What that means is we want to have strong swimmers in each event and so we’re working on our breaststroke especially making sure we’re strong there.

The next swim meet for varsity and junior varsity is from March 24 through March 26 at the Mission Viejo Invite located at Wollett High School.
