On the last day before Spring Break started, the boys varsity volleyball team went up against the Marina Vikings, winning all three sets.

The first spike was made by Luke Davis (‘17) and the Barons began to take the lead this set. Downey Huynh (‘17) and Jake Loudenback (’17) made a powerful spike that bounced off Marina’s receiver and flew to the back of the court. With the last couple of spikes made by Cody Newsome (‘17) and Huynh, the Barons won the first set 25-16.

“I think I did alright, I think all the attention should go to Timmy Ho. He gave out really good sets and he really brought the game to our team. Timmy was the one who placed the sets really well, once he’s on fire, I’m on fire; everything relies on Timmy,” said Huynh, giving high praise to his teammate Timothy Ho (’17).

With the first point scored by Marina, Matthew Gemeinhardt (‘17) scored a point back with a follow up tip point by Huynh. Loudenback made two spikes and another by Huynh who continued to make multiple spikes throughout this set. Towards the end of the set, the boys were caught scuffing their shoes on the court before going back in to play, but Coach Olbright grabbed a towel and cleaned up after them and the crowd applauded to his gesture. The last spike before winning the set was made by Gemeinhardt, ending the set 25-18.

With a service error made by Marina, Fountain Valley scores the first point of the final set. Two spikes were made by Benjamin Minch (‘18) soon after, one being an ace. When Marina tried setting up a ball, it was hit too close to the net and Huynh took advantage of that mistake and spiked it down, giving the Barons a confidence point. The score was fairly even for a while, but Fountain Valley took the reigns, with multiple spikes made by Huynh, Gemeinhardt and Newsome. The final set ended 25-18.

“Our team did really good, like I said before our team relies on Timmy and when his sets are on point, we’re on point. [Huntington] they’re a lot better than Marina, so we need to bring our A game, so we need Timmy to be on point if we want to take them down,” said Huynh.
