Fountain Valley varsity girls’ volleyball went up against Edison for their second match of the season but lost with a score of 1-3.

“[Coming into the game] I didn’t know what to expect because I’ve a lot heard a lot about [Edison] but I didn’t know how they were going to be this year. But I also think they were a tough opponent and I have a lot of respect for them,” said sophomore Serena Hom.

The first set began with a point to the Charger’s side. Great effort was shown through the Lady Barons efforts but did not successfully execute the ball until sophomore Phoebe Minch swang from the back row and scored the team’s first point. Another point for the Barons left the score 2-4. The ladies soon fell behind in points as Edison continued to execute, which left the score 8-21. Sophomore Minch attempted to salvage the score, but the set ended at 10-25.

Fountain Valley scored the first two points of the second set but the Chargers came back around and scored an additional eight points. Sophomore Jenna Peterson hit and scored with follow-up point made by Minch in a rally in which Edison failed to hit the ball over the net. Another wide one out gave the Barons another point and Minch spiked through a block which brought their score up 6-10. Good saves were made by sophomore Rachel Lucie and senior Mia Lara in the final half if the game. Additional blocks were made by Lara, Everson and Lucie and senior Kay Nguyen was brought in and gave her team two points more points. But an out made by the Barons resulted in a loss of 15-25.

The third set started out rough. At 0-4, senior Everson hit past the block and gave the ladies their first point. The Lady Barons caught up and the points began to pool in as senior Kennedy Hoenig aced the Chargers multiple times. The score was at 16-14 as sophomore Minch made another kill cross court. Rallies begin to last longer as both teams are determined to reach 25 first. The crowd echoed their excitement and cheered on their beloved team. Aces from Hom led the score to 22-20. Gamepoint left the crowd at the edge and off of their seat as sophomore Minch scored the 25th point.

In the final set, the Chargers made the first point but made a service error, which gave the Barons a point soon after. Edison kept the lead in the first half but with a few mistakes made by the Chargers and spikes made by Lara, Minch and Everson helped keep the score in check at 6-11. A few net violations made by Fountain Valley put Edison in the lead for the remainder of the game, with the exception of junior Emily Yanagihara who hit and scored right before Edison made game point at 15-25.

“I think today the game went well, we had a little ups and downs down there. My teammates did awesome, they were running up and down the court, they were aggressive, they were doing great. We can all improve on encouraging one another when we’re in a huddle and bring each other on to gain momentum on the floor,” said Hom.
