With the upcoming annual Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill on Oct. 19, students should be reminded to be aware of earthquake preparedness in the case of an emergency.

It is important to be equipped with the proper knowledge and plan to be safe.

In the event of an indoor-earthquake, remember to:

  1. Drop to the ground, take cover and wait for the shaking to stop. In the case there is no object to use as protection, cover your body and head with your arms crouching in the corner of any room.
  2. Stay away from hazards such as glass windows, lighting fixtures and doors.
  3. Avoid any doorway unless it is strongly built and supportive.
  4. Remain indoors to prevent injury. When the shaking stops, exit the building to a safe area.

In the event of an outdoor-earthquake, remember to:

  1. Stay in one place —  don’t move or attempt to escape.
  2. Keep clear of streetlights, buildings, utility and vehicles.
  3. Find an open space and get down low to avoid being knocked down by the shaking.
  4. Avoid areas outside of buildings at exits and any infrastructure.
  5. Stop as quickly and safely as possible if you are driving on the road. It is important to not leave your vehicle until the shaking stops.

It is also very important to have supplies ready in the event of any situation. Stocking up on supplies enough for up to four days of use can ensure safety in the case of emergencies.

Be sure to stock up on the following materials:

  1. First Aid Kit: Keep it freshly stocked in a convenient area.
  2. Drugs and Medications: Hydrogen peroxide, antibiotics, aspirin, prescriptions, etc.
  3. Dressings: This includes bandages, gauze, cotton-tipped swabs, etc.
  4. Miscellaneous: Scissors, thermometer, bar soap, pocket knife, safety pins, cold pack, etc.
  5. Tools and Supplies: Shoes, candles, clothing, tent, blankets, portable radio, matches, etc.

Another key component to earthquake preparation is a plan. It is essential to have a plan for any type of emergency to ensure safety. Always be knowledgeable of all exits in a building if the need to evacuate arises.

With over 37 million participants globally this year, the Great Shakeout serves as a reminder for everyone to be knowledgeable and prepared in the case of a disaster. It is important to always have a plan in order to remain safe.
