In the second to last game of the season, the Fountain Valley Varsity Girls’ volleyball team went up against Los Alamitos High School with a losing score of 0-3.

“We’re going to push really, really hard this is our final week of volleyball in the season so we’re playing our best and today I think we did really good; our defense was really good and so was our offense,” said senior Kay Nguyen.

Starting off in the first set, the Lady Barons fought hard against the Griffins. The first point was made by sophomore Phoebe Minch and the motion of the game was set. Points were scored back and forth with aces by senior Mia Lara and junior Jenelle Valencia with a score of 8-9. Many errors were made on both sides including net violations from Los Al and dumps that caught the Lady Barons off guard. With great effort from the team, the score for the first set was 18-25.

The second set began with a free point from Los Al. The Griffins got a net violation and the Barons used it to their advantage. Seniors Nguyen and Jenna Everson came up to block twice in a row to score two more points for their team. After a service error, Los Al came back with a nine point run to make the game more intense. Sophomores Minch and Sadie Templin and senior Nguyen came up with strong hands and blocked multiple swings from the Los Al side. Long rallies built up and kept fans on the edge of their seats as the two teams battled side by side. A service error from Fountain Valley ended the set, trailing, with a close score of 21-25

In the final set, the girls were on a streak with spikes from Minch until Los Al scored from a service error. Minch scored multiple times and helped carry the team to ties every few points. Sophomore Serena Hom attempted to spike multiple times, each one being blocked until an unsuccessful receive gave the point to Los Al. Service errors and a block point made by seniors Nguyen and Everson gave the Lady Barons extra points and the final spike came from Minch until Los Al secured the set point, ending the game 19-25.

The final game and senior night will be October 19 against Newport Harbor.
