With the end of the first semester coming up in a few weeks, seniors in Government are in need of fulfilling their semester requirement of community service. Many seniors are having trouble finishing their service and are unaware of the many opportunities. With this list of local volunteer opportunities, seniors can find out how to complete their hours.

1. OC Public Libraries

Libraries are a great place to help out and earn community service hours. In service to the public, they’re always in need of volunteers to assist in their monthly events such as storytime. Tasks that they always are in need of help in are shelving books, homework help, cleaning up and event preparation. Be sure to go to your local library to find out if they are in need of any help.

2. Boys & Girls Club

Any local Boys & Girls club is always in need of help from volunteers. The many kids and teens are always open to volunteers helping out with homework, art and crafts, and events. Seniors can go to any to find out if there are any tasks they can help out with. The Boys & Girls Club of Huntington Beach is currently looking for volunteers to help out during the month of December with their crafting events.

3. American Red Cross Donation Center

Red Cross is a good organization to volunteer your time with. For example, at our local blood donation center in Fountain Valley, they’re always looking for volunteers to help out with checking in donors and tasks such as organizing paperwork. With a bit of proper training and interest, the Blood Donation center can be a great volunteer opportunity.

4. Soup Kitchens

During the holidays, many turn to soup kitchens for a meal and valuable resources. Spending a few hours helping out at a local soup kitchen can be a very fun and rewarding experience as you’re giving back to those in need. Soup kitchens need volunteers to help pass out food, gather donations, make sandwiches and etc. Mary’s Kitchen is a specific kitchen that’s always in need of help.

Of course, these options are not the only things you can do to help out our community. Be sure to search and keep an eye out for any opportunities locally.

From helping out at a local elementary school to picking up trash around your neighborhood, it’s not very hard to perform community service. Seniors should also keep in mind that volunteering hours aren’t only a requirement to fulfill, rather an act of service that should become practice.
