As the end of the semester is approaching, the newer members of Baron Broadcast News have learned many new things from the start of September to now. Some of the few new members, Vikki Nguyen (’18), Shane Hernandez (’20), and Jake Gliddon (’21) reflect on the semester with BBN and the things they had to learn.

Vikki Nguyen (18′)

“Originally, the first time I saw BBN, I wanted to join immediately because I thought it was so cool but it just didn’t fit in my schedule until senior year,” said Vikki, “it was definitely something I wanted to be a part of.” She was interested in how people were able to make interesting videos for the whole school to watch.

Vikki learned some new things about editing and filming with a DSLR camera. “Well, I initially didn’t know much about filming or anything of that sort. All I knew really was how to take photos on a camera & how to use iMovie,” she said, “but now, I’ve learned how to do other things like correctly record videos through different settings or how to edit creative videos through Adobe premiere”.

“If you’re considering joining BBN next year, I’d say definitely GO. FOR. IT.” exclaimed Vikki. She regrets not joining earlier, but she’s glad that she finally joined because of the amazing experience she had so far.

Shane Hernandez (20′)

“I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker and BBN just seemed like an incredible experience,” said Shane. He explains that being in BBN would help him get a taste of what being a filmmaker is like.

“I walked into BBN with zero experience what so ever. But now I have definitely got more of an idea of how to work a camera,” said Shane, “For example the third day of camp we had to set up the camera and tripod in under seven minutes. I failed to do so the first day but the next day I did it in four.” During BBN camp, Shane learned the basics of setting up a camera and improved his technique in less than a day.

“You’re in for a real ride of fun. It’s not always going to be easy, it can be challenging but you become better at what you do. Try not to stress out too much. Just know you’ve got people in BBN who are always here to help,” said Shane. Although times could be rough, he reassures that there will be people here to teach you things you might’ve not known.

Jake Gliddon (21′)

“I’ve been getting into editing for a while & It’s become a passion of mine. I also wanted to create videos while working with teams,” said Jake.

“Before I joined I didn’t know anything about cameras. But since I’ve joined using them has become very simple,” said Jake. “I’ve also learned how to use Premiere Pro… which can look intimidating at first, but once someone shows you a few things, it’s very very intuitive. A part of the learning process is having experienced people teach me how to do these things starting with the easiest elements first.” Jake quickly learned the basics of cameras and editing with Premiere Pro quickly within joining the class. He explains that he’s learned a lot of new things just from asking the experienced members.

“A piece of advice I’d give to someone interested in joining BBN is to make sure you have the time and are dedicated enough to spend your hours’ filming, editing, etc. during and after school,” said Jake. He describes time management as a key to getting your packages in on time and you also should be dedicated to the things you do.
