ASB Executive Board for the 2013-2014 School Year was announced to all teachers on campus via email on Friday, May 21.

For the first time in FVHS history, there was no open election for the positions of the executive council of ASB.

“We had a unique situation this year,” said administrator Mr. Joe Fraser, the Assistant Principal of Activities and ASB advisor. “Where we would usually have over twenty applications to consider, we only had nine, and after the interview process, we discovered we only had five truly qualified candidates for such demanding positions.”

Other changes will also take place next year. While in the past there have been seven Executive Commissioners, next year’s ASB will only have five.

“We decided to get rid of the Activities positions on Executive Board,” said current ASB president Jessica Le (‘13). “We thought it would easier to communicate and lead effective events with a more centralized leadership team.”

“I personally don’t think that this should continue in the future,” said Le. “The school should have a say in their own student government, but we had to work with this unique situation this year.”

While many students may feel that the election was “rigged,” the results were generally due to a lack of application and interest, which could have resulted from a different timeline from usual.

“Usually we have ASB elections before spring break,” said ASB member Yvonne Le (‘14), “but this year we ended up waiting until mid-May to discuss the elections, which probably deterred some people from applying. Since we ended up with five qualified candidates running unopposed for five spots, I think not hosting elections was a good decision because it saved time, money, and paper for the environment.”

Overall, the new Executive Board looks forward to a successful year of exciting events and increased student spirit.

The administrative ASB was announced yesterday, consisting of twenty three additional members.

“We will work hard to make next year successful,” said future President Tricia Vuong (‘14). “We believe that we are fully equipped to make this coming year even better than this one.”
