The Fountain Valley girls’ volleyball team played against Marina for their third game of the season and won with a score of 3-0.

The first set began with the Lady Barons unable to get a short tip from the Viking’s side. Right after, however, senior Mia Lara hit angle and killed the ball. Another point was given after Marina girls hit out. Senior Lara went on a serving run as she made three clean aces. Throughout the set, many aces were made by junior Jenelle Valencia and sophomore Phoebe Minch. As the score became 12-6, the Lady Barons and Vikings battled it out as points went back and forth. Finally, at 21-16, junior Emily Svartstrom killed the ball and Valencia got a clean ace right after. With two more kills from Minch, the set ended at 25-16.

Fountain Valley got the first point as the second set began. Another point was made after senior Alex Brooks tipped the ball over the block, which made it unreachable for the Vikings. Multiple rallies gave points to both sides of the court. Multiple errors made by the Vikings lead to a timeout with the score at 14-9. After a lengthy rally, Marina earned the point, but Fountain Valley came back with the next. With aces made by senior Wendy Doran and Minch and great saves by senior Kennedy Hoenig, the score was 24-15. With a great kill from junior Alyssa Calnon, the set was won with a score of 25-15.

In the final set, although the Barons took the first point, Marina climbed up ahead in points but the girls were right behind. Seniors Kay Nguyen and Brooks defended their side strongly and helped the team earn a few points in the process, with Nguyen who spiked a point herself. Hoenig made good saves and was able to hit the ball over, which scored

the team an additional point. At 22-17, the game began to intensify and the point difference only became shorter. But with a final dump shot by Minch, the game ended 25-20.

“I think today’s game went really well. We had some strong points, we pulled together really well as a team and we made sure we stayed strong even against, maybe a bigger team, and we pulled together and made sure we did our jobs on our side of the court,” said Svartstrom.
