This afternoon, the boys’ varsity soccer team won their second Division 2 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) playoff game, beating the Martin Luther (ML) King High School Wolves 5-2.

The game began at an impasse, with plays up and down the field until the Wolves scored off of a penalty kick in the 11th minute of the game. The Barons responded immediately with two goals scored by sophomores Sebastian Rus and Dylan Duong, bringing the score to 2-1 in the first 15 minutes of the half.

After 10 more minutes of back and forth action, Duong scored the Barons’ third goal of the game. Possession continued to change hands, with close shots on goal by both ML King and junior Omar Shukairy, until a third goal by Duong at the end of the half put the Barons at a 4-1 halftime lead.

The second half played out intensely, with multiple attacks on goal by both sides until junior Devon Verde scored in the 21st minute. The Wolves managed to score soon after, putting the score at 5-2. The half ended with several close advances on both goals, including a breakaway by junior Tyler Le in the last minutes of the game.

The Barons will advance to the CIF quarterfinals to play at Cabrillo High School on Wednesday.
