On Thursday, in the game of the week, the girls’ varsity volleyball team defeated the Marina High School Vikings with an astounding score of 3-0.

The first set started off intense with a tied score of 3-3 until senior Jenna Peterson scored a kill. The Barons began to pull away with two more points made by Peterson along with great blocks from her teammates gave the Barons a lead of 11-4 by the second time out. Peterson scored another kill straight out of the time out. An intense battle erupted with two consecutive blocks, but it ultimately resulted in a point for the Vikings. Senior Phoebe Minch came through with back to back aces. The Barons finished the first set off strong with digs by seniors Rachel Lucie and Lindsey Nguyen and won with a score of 25-14.

Driven by a great first set, the Barons started off the second set strong with two kills by Minch and a kill by sophomore Zoe Ziegler. Lucie and junior Lauren Mena proved to be strong servers through their consecutive aces. Minch showed great effort when she advanced to the net after a dig to score another kill. The Barons kept a strong lead over the vkings until Peterson scored the last point with a strategic tip, bringing the score to 25-14.

“We started off strong, we continued to stay on [the Vikings] and we never let up. Since the last game, we really improved on finishing the sets. After we got 20 points, we finished strong and we didn’t let them come back at all,” said Minch

Determined to secure the win, the Barons showed great effort in the beginning of the second set where the two teams battled for the lead with a tied score of 4-4. After many mistakes from the Vikings, the Barons gained the lead and kept the momentum going with kills from Minch and Peterson. Great teamwork was displayed when Lucie made a dig for senior Cassie Nguyen to score a point. Minch ended the set strong with two more kills, bringing the score to 25-14.

“We had a lot of energy in all three sets. When [the Vikings] started to comeback in the third set, we picked it up and we were able to shut them down. We improved a lot with siding out faster, so we were able to get more points and win,” said Lucie, “I think we can definitely win more games. In the last games, we were so close and now with this momentum, we can carry it on to win more games.”
