You’re scrolling on Instagram when you suddenly come across a photo of miniature butterfly earrings that you know are trendy and in style right now. Look! They’re only three dollars a pair. What a steal!

Well, if you didn’t know, these earrings are carefully crafted with love by Mama & Cait Jewelry, a newly-established business run by Caitlyn Nguyen, a junior at Fountain Valley High School (FVHS), and her mother.

The best part about purchasing jewelry from Mama & Cait is all of the proceeds go straight to charity.

“My mother and I decided to open our business in late June,” Nguyen said. “We then began selling small accessories, mainly earrings.”

Like many other student businesses at FVHS, Nguyen’s jewelry shop was created out of sheer boredom during isolation. Their business, however, is still active during the school year.

“Although we began our business during quarantine, we are still continuing to build our business,” Nguyen said. “This is so that we can provide donations to local shelters and charities that align with our values.”

Since their opening, Mama & Cait have achieved much success with support from their friends and family. They also have been receiving an endless amount of positive reviews from their customers.

“Caitlyn’s earrings are super affordable for the quality and care that comes with it,” freshman Yves Tran said. “Her service is super fast and she’s very kind. The earrings itself are really durable and cute.”

Running any business always comes with its challenges, especially since Nguyen has to manage both school and her extracurriculars.

“There are definitely many challenges as we never expected to handle something like this, especially since we have our own lives going on,” Nguyen said. “But in the end, we are always able to find time for our business.”

Nguyen currently has many hopes and plans for her business and is very happy to say that she is able to make an impact in her community.

“We are definitely planning many things for our future and we hope that we can expand beyond just earrings and jewelry,” Nguyen said. “We really want to be able to use our platform to make a difference.”
