This Tuesday, the varsity girls’ soccer team tied against the Corona del Mar (CdM) Sea Kings with a score of 1-1; they were mainly on the defensive side as they battled CdM.

Four minutes into the first quarter, sophomore center Kayla Knoob (#21) attacked midfield and scored a goal against the Sea Kings. For the remainder of the first half, it was mainly a back-and-forth between the Barons and the Sea Kings. The Lady Barons took a strong defensive role while the Sea Kings went heavy on offense. Due to their strong defense, the Barons successfully blocked many of their opponents’ attempts to score. The first half ended with a score of 1-0.

“It felt really good [scoring] especially since it was early in the game and it’s always good to get an early goal. It sets the tone for the game and it was really nice to have that, ” Knoob said.

In the second half, the girls tried attacking more to keep their lead against the Sea Kings. The third quarter consisted of more back-and-forth scrimmages between the two teams, however, the Barons kept their strategy from the previous quarters and mostly remained on the defensive. The Barons and Sea Kings both attempted to score multiple times throughout the third quarter but fell short.

In the final quarter, Corona del Mar scored the last goal of the game, making it 1-1.

Before the two teams tied, CdM had a winning streak of 11-0-0. After tying with the Barons, their new record is 11-0-1.

“We did a good job pressuring them and creating turnovers in part of the field that allowed it to be dangerous, but when that wasn’t there we were put on our heels and they were able to attack our goal a little bit more. Especially in the second half, we did a much better job of finding each other… and I felt like we should’ve had at least a couple of goals in that half,” assistant coach Ryan Brown said.

With this tie, this will now be the Lady Barons’ third tie of the season and an overall record of 5-4-3. Their next match will be an away game against the Edison Chargers at the Chargers’ home field on Jan. 6 at 5 p.m.
