The Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) girl’s volleyball team went up against Marina High School (MHS) last Thursday. The team lost all three of their matches. The first set was 9-25, the second set 16- 25 and the last set with 24-26. Though the final score was 0-3, the Barons showed impressive play throughout.

Team captain junior Dezi Butler consistently energized her team by shouting encouragement throughout their matches, boosting morale.

In an interview after the game, Butler shared her thoughts on her team’s performance that night.

“I really think we have a good team this year,” Butler said. “And I think our confidence is so low because everybody knows us as the Fountain Valley losers and so we just had to get out of that mindset.”

Junior Maylynn Pham earned the title of shining star for Thursday’s game. She skillfully spiked every ball set her way by Butler, earning valuable points for the Barons. Pham played as a crucial member of the team and consistently made valuable plays throughout the game.  Reflecting on playing alongside Pham, Butler said, “She’s my sister on the court, and she is always hitting my ball.”

Another standout player on the court was senior Joycemary Dang. She was on the court when Pham was resting, consistently spiking the ball over the net. Dang displayed impressive vertical leaps to score some electric points for the Lady Barons.

The energy in the crowd was electric, with the audience watching every move on the edges of their seats, eagerly awaiting the outcome of the next match.

There was even a friendly rivalry between the Marina JV/FS teams and the Fountain Valley JV/FS teams. One team would shout a chant, then the other would respond even louder. This lively exchange continued throughout all three matches, providing entertaining moments for spectators.

Despite coming up short, FVHS showed resilience and did not give up, fighting until the final point, displaying a competitive spirit that will bode well in future matches.

The next volleyball game the Barons will play is on Sept. 28 against Newport Harbor High School.
