At the beginning of every school year, all Fountain Valley High School (FVHS) students are required to take a photo for their school identification (ID) card. This physical card includes a unique student ID number, which allows Barons to borrow materials from the library, check out textbooks and get two free meals — a breakfast and lunch — every day.
In addition to an ID card, students can purchase a student activity card, which provides additional benefits to the physical ID card. There are two different types of student activity cards on sale: the Associated Student Body (ASB) Card and the Super Baron Card. Each of these cards provides different benefits that allow students to enhance their campus experience in accordance with their prices.
Students can choose the card that best aligns with their preferences and budget, tailoring to their campus involvement and benefits accordingly. These cards can be purchased through the online student store or in person at the finance office.
So, what is the difference between the ASB and Super Baron Cards?
ASB Card
The ASB Card was on sale this year for $65.00. It includes free entrance to all home athletic events and reduced admissions to away games, except for the California Interscholastic Foundation (CIF) playoff games. The card also includes discounts on some school dances, such as Homecoming, Winter Formal and Prom.
Super Baron Card
The Super Baron Card was on sale this year for $130.00. It includes all the benefits of the ASB card with the addition of a yearbook.
Yearbook
The price of the yearbook varies in cost each year due to inflation and the various designs. The more pronounced the design, the more expensive the yearbook. The cost of the yearbook also depends on the time of purchase — the earlier the order, the cheaper the price.
This year, the starting price for a yearbook at FVHS is $110.00.
Dance tickets
As mentioned, each student activity card provides a discount on some school dances. Below is a comparison of the dance ticket discounts from the past three school years, from the 2021-2022 to the 2023-2024 school year.
Note: The Winter Formal and Prom dances have not taken place for the 2023-2024 school year.

The discounts on dance tickets provided for both cards are mostly the same, except for the Aloha and Winter Formal dance for the 2022-2023 school year. The ASB card provided no discounts for the Aloha and the Winter Formal, while the Super Baron card provided a free Aloha ticket and a $5.00 discount for the Winter Formal dance.
Profits from the cards
Every year, about half of the student body purchases a student activity card. With 3,132 students on campus, this means the profits generated can vary from around $101,790 to $203,580.
The proceeds from these cards are used by ASB for activities such as athletics, school rallies, dances, plays, student government, clubs, commissions and graduation. These activities depend partly or entirely on student funds raised through card sales.
“In seven years, we have only increased the Super Baron card by $10.00. We are proud to say we have the cheapest student activity card in our district,” Assistant Principal of Activities and Athletics Hayato Yuuki said.

** Ocean View High School (OVHS) did not offer any student activity cards in the 2023-2024 school year; as such, the information is taken from the 2022-2023 school year’s sale. OVHS offered a Basic Package ($150.00), a Cardinal Package (Basic Package + Homecoming)($175.00) and a Senior/Junior Gold Package ($250.00).
The price differences are caused by the addition of spirit merchandise, dance tickets and the different yearbook prices.
“Each dollar you invest is returned directly to the students in the form of one of these student programs,” Yuuki said.
