Menu changes to meet Federal requirements

By Colette Nguyen, Staff Writer

There have been some changes to the lunch menu at FVHS for the new school year.

According to the USDA Smart Snacks in Schools program, the 2014-2015 school year must meet the nutrition requirements.  Tornados, chimichangas, ramen noodles, and large Gatorades have been taken off the lunch menu.

“They took away the large sized drinks because we’re not allowed to have 16 and over oz drinks anymore.” said student lunch worker, Ellesia Tran (‘17).

This lunch dilemma arose because the food sold last year did not meet the school nutrition requirements, making it illegal to sell.

“Some did not pass the required amount of protein.” said FVHS lunch manager, Valerie Davis.

Some students have different opinions about the new lunches.

“I’m pretty indecisive about food so I will miss the variety they had last year.  I understand that the school is serving our best interest and trying to keep us healthy, but I hope they’ll bring more to the menu really soon!” said Michelle Tran (‘17).

“I think that the new food offers are great.” said Dylan Huynh (‘17). “Healthy food choices will really help our students. Instead of giving them all the fats, oils, and preservatives that can really be harmful to us.”

However, during the end of the previous school year, the cafeteria was already trying out new foods and flavors of drinks to sell.   Carnitas burritos, bean and cheese burritos, peach iced tea, mango green tea, and Island Chiller Blue Raspberry slush are replacing food that has been removed.  Vending machines also provide new chocolate and strawberry oatmeal bars and 12g Whole Grain Cheez-Its.

School nutrition programs hope that these changes will promote healthier lifestyles for children and teenagers in the U.S.
