Kind, ambitious and hardworking. These are three words that sophomore Christine Garcia would use to describe herself. Whether it is pursuing her passions related to the environment or her crochet creations, Garcia is a remarkable journalist ready to accomplish her goals with unwavering determination.

Garcia joined Baron Banner this school year after following the student-run newspaper’s social media accounts.

“I really liked the stuff Baron Banner was writing about, and I thought it’d be a great place to express myself and adapt to the school environment,” Garcia said. “I’m hoping to write informative articles that help people [and] where people feel like their voices are being heard.”

Outside of her academic commitments, Garcia is involved with several volunteer clubs and organizations. She enjoys service opportunities such as beach cleanups, which relates to her passion for the environment.

Garcia believes that the two most important issues facing our environment are overconsumption and climate change.

“Overconsumption, especially fast fashion nowadays, I feel like that’s a huge problem. [Also] being educated on climate change, because not a lot of people actually believe in climate change,” Garcia said. “I think it’s important to educate and take action toward environmental change.”

Her hobbies include reading nonfiction books and crocheting projects such as tote bags and handbags. Although she admits she is just starting off on her crochet passion, she’s determined to improve her skills one stitch at a time.

This school year, Garcia’s goals include making new friends as well as discovering new things about herself. She also hopes to join Mock Trial this school year, as it would potentially connect to a future career.

“I see myself in college probably studying law. Maybe I could do environmental law,” Garcia said. “Or maybe I see myself working for a nonprofit for environmental change.”

Whichever career path she pursues, Garcia’s ambition and goal-achieving mindset toward her passions will surely contribute to her lasting impact on the world.
