On Wednesday, girls varsity field hockey went head to head against Westminster in a long hard fought battle, in which the Lady Barons emerged victorious with an overall score of 1-0.

Cameron Pettus (’17) made many notable passes, contributing to the defense of the team. Alyssa Lambert (‘18) playing as center mid was a notable player that contributed to the team’s success.

The Lady Barons made a comeback, after losing their first game against Westminster. Making their first and last win of the whole season, the team conquered the Lions with an overall score of 1-0.

The first half of the intense game started with offense pushing and gaining on the opponents. The teams battled it out, moving constantly from one side of the field to the other. The Barons excelled in their defense, continually defending their goal from the Lions.

Sophia Rivera (‘17) scored the first and winning point for the team during the end of the first half with only two seconds to spare.

After halftime, freshman Madison Grogan (‘20) stole the spotlight. With her great defense and offense skills, she captured the hearts of the crowd. She was a key player that contributed to the team’s win.

The Lions fought a tough battle during the second half as they attempted to score a point, but the Lady Barons were persistent in their defense and were determined to prevent their opponents from scoring.

The Lions couldn’t compete with the strong offensive and defensive players of the Lady Barons as they were defeated in the end by one point.

“I’m very proud of my team and overall it couldn’t have been a better game. Our season definitely wasn’t great in the beginning but we got ourselves together, and last game we finally won one, so we’re totally stoked,” said Senior Co-Captain Rivera. “I’m devastated leaving, but I know that the team is in great hands.”

This last game was senior night as well for the girls, and the team celebrated the remaining seniors and their last moments playing for the team. Family and friends congratulated the girls on their win.

“I’m proud of the girls, they came out to win. Next season we will be focusing on working together as a team and going back to the basics,” said Coach Allison Renth.

Overall the team is proud of their win and hope to improve next season. Notable players included Sophie Bryant (‘17) and Brianna Diogostine (‘17). With that said, all members of the team played well and contributed to the win.
