Girls’ varsity tennis defeated Edison High School on Tuesday by a score of 10-8 and continued their triumph against Maria High School on Thursday with a score of 12-6.  Earlier in the season, the girls lost to Edison by a score of 9-9 but won against Marina by a score of 10-8.

During the game against Edison, senior Sharon Chen accidentally slammed into the back fence while passionately chasing after a ball.  However, Chen recovered quickly and continued to play just minutes after this incident. With her partner, senior Aozora Ito, Chen ended up winning two out of three matches against Edison.

“This game against Edison, we all pulled our own weight.  Considering we lost against Edison the first time we played against them, it motivated us to work harder and to just not give up no matter what the score was or what our condition was at that point,” said Chen.

On Thursday’s game against Marina, the doubles teams did exceedingly well and won all nine of their sets. While for singles, senior Victoria Nguyen won two sets and junior Charisse Vu won one set, bringing it to a total of twelve winning sets.

After two weeks of sitting on the sidelines, junior Ivy Tran had a triumphant return to the tennis courts. According to Tran, she suffered a painful strain in her back, making it difficult for her

to even walk some days. Despite this injury, Tran came out on top this past week, winning all six of her matches against Edison and Marina with her partner, senior Hanh Pham.

“It felt good to come back to support my team once again on the courts. I felt very nervous at first but with Hanh being my doubles partner, it was like a breeze since we worked very well together and were able to beat all the other teams easily. Because of her ankle, she can’t run as much so we just have to work harder to get those balls when she can’t.  Overall, I’m just very excited for the next games after our defeat over Edison and Marina,” said Tran.

The team’s next game will be against Los Alamitos on Tuesday, October 17th at Fountain Valley High School.
