Fountain Valley KIWIN’S is currently in the running to receive the Halo Grant, a Nickelodeon based grant that provides any one Key Club or KIWIN’S organization the opportunity to win $2000-$2500 for a service project.

The Halo Grant was created as a part of the partnership between Key Club International and Nickelodeon in the HALO Movement, a movement that inpsires kids to become leaders and make a difference in their community.

If Fountain Valley KIWIN’S wins the grant, the money will be used to purchase a power generator for the West Virginian Islands and assemble 400 food packages in order to help rebuild the community from the damage caused by Hurricane Irma.

The winner is selected based off a voting process where students and families can vote for their school through Facebook, once a day, which started on Dec. 4 and will end Dec. 10 at 11:59 p.m. The top 10 schools then proceed to the final round where a panel of judges will select the winning school.

Vice-president of KIWIN’S and senior Calvin Tran heard stories of his aunt’s trip to the West Virginian islands, where she helped with the community. Inspired by his aunt, Tran decided to create a service project that would help the West Virginian islands.

“After I saw her gofund page, I was really touched to see that she was actually wanting to do this. I talked to her about this Halo Grant and she seemed really excited about it, and everything just clicked together afterwards,” said Tran.

Although there is a chance Tran may not receive the grant, he wanted to leave a memorable impact on his community during his last year of high school.

“It’s my senior year and I really wanted to make a difference in my community. I felt with this project, I could make a big impact on a cause my family has been attached to,” said Tran.

He not only hopes to leave an impact on his community, but to inspire his fellow KIWIN’S members to find a project they’re passionate about and encourage them to make a difference.

“I really hope as a leader to inspire [my members] to find their own service projects and make it a unique way for them to give back to their community in a passionate way,” said Tran.
