The Ultimate Winter Break Productivity Guide

Study over break but make sure to have fun too!

If you were planning to procrastinate on your homework and English project until the night before school, you might as well do something for the next two weeks – besides watching TV, of course. And yes, there actually are things to do in Orange County for the holidays. So get ready to spend winter break in a productive manner, with this guide to tell you the top 5 must-sees of the OC.

1. This year is Newport Beach’s 103rd Christmas Boat Parade. From December 14-18, 2011, come on out to view the spectacular array of boats all decked out (no pun intended) for with lights and decorations ‘tis the season. At approximately 6:30 to around 8:30 PM, the boats will light up for the public to see for free, and believe me, or at least the million people that come out annually, they are a sight to behold. If you would like a closer view of the boats, ships, and their decorations, tickets will be sold to be a part of the “parade” and be a spectator from a ship. The ships take off from Collins Island beginning at around 6:30 and admission is sold beforehand. On the last night, Sunday, December 18, 2011 fireworks will also be a part of the ending of the five consecutive days of celebrations. 2. Irvine Regional Park also hosts its newer but also jolly tradition of the annual Christmas Train that offers meeting, greeting, and having the opportunity to take pictures with Santa Claus as its main event. 2011 marks Irvine’s 15th year celebration. This is a great opportunity to take younger siblings, cousins, or even just go with friends. This event hosts activities, food, carnival games, and cheerful festivities. This occasion lasts from 12/2/11 – 12/24/11 (Christmas Eve). 3. South Coast Plaza hosts its annual “Santa’s Village and the North Pole” from December 2, 2011 to January 1, 2012.  However, Santa doesn’t make an appearance for photo opportunities until December 18. Holiday entertainment will be provided amidst the season’s carols. Many activities will be made available in Santa’s Village. Complimentary hot cocoa and cider will be served on the weekends starting December 3-24, 2011 in the Garden Terrace, and who doesn’t love (free) hot chocolate? On the plus side, if the scene does get overwhelming, lose yourself in the shops (and sales) surrounding you. For more info, visit http://southcoastplaza.com/holiday/.

4. View a holiday classic over the break, and spend a little money to experience a traditional play that will you won’t regret – The Nutcracker. Presented by the Festival Ballet Theatre at Irvine Barclay Theater and Cheng Hall from 12/10/11 to 12/24/11, the Nutcracker is an original production that is a must see. Different dates allot for different performing artists, some internationally acclaimed. 5. Has science ever been so fun…and delicious? Come to the Discovery Science Center now through January 1, 2012, and participate in a major Gingerbread house, man, and even car event. Learn the sciences of tools, recipes, and much more in a hands-on gingerbread making event throughout the season. The fun is meant for kids, adults, and teens alike, so head on out to “the Cube” for some seasonal, delectable fun! For more information, visit http://www.discoverycube.org/gingerbread/.

Now that you’re armed with the places and events to make this winter break of 2011 a creative one, you have the power to do it. Don’t let another break go by with ‘what ifs’. Now when your friends ask you what you did for break, “nothing” is not an acceptable or truthful answer.
