Gender Loses The War

By Sarah Pham

Gender Wars, a long Fountain Valley tradition of pitting boys against girls in a week long battle of fun and games has received many complaints over recent years for being too “sexist” and excluding minority groups such as gays and transgender students.

Rumor around campus the past few weeks proclaimed the end of Gender Wars. Its demise was confirmed at Thursday’s House of Reps meeting.

Mr. Fraser announced the decision to “upgrade” the tradition and rename it Baron Wars or Baron Games. In this version, rather than a fight to decide which gender is superior, the student body will be halved and the two groups will battle each other instead. ASB will be incorporating interactive games with the audience in order to improve participation, something many students want in assemblies according to ASB’s recent school survey.  Their main goal is to try to unify the school through friendly, competitive games.

The question now is whether or not this new incarnation will attract the enthusiasm of FV students or if this new twist will soften students’ anticipation for the event. Will this new way of splitting the student body give more students the chance to participate or will it fizzle as students no longer have the opportunity to participate in that age old battle of the sexes?

  1. I’m glad it’s done and over with. It was just another way to perpetuate annoying gender stereotypes about men and women.

  2. Are you kidding me. Why is every tradition getting thrown out. No international week. no gender wars. no sadies. what the heck is going on!? i was looking forward to all of these things. all the changes that happened have stunk. the pep rallies were terrible.

    1. Sadies isn’t cancelled. Senior commission is only changing the name to Spring Fling because Sadies has been getting a bad rep for the past few years and they want to make some improvements to avoid any more bad reputations like previous years.

  3. Whatever, it’s not like gender wars was anything great anyways. We should change it to race wars. Pit asians against whites against blacks against hispanics against middle eastern. YEEEEAAAAAH.

  4. Overcritical people are overreacting. I had hopes that the idiots who screamed “RACISM!” or “SEXIST” at everything were just 12 year old little brats who thought it was funny. I’m really ashamed of these people who said such… I suppose this situation is just another witch trial for society to face. Thanks, Barons. Thank you.

  5. LOL. AND HOW THE HECK IS SPLITTING UP THE ASB TO BATTLE EACH OTHER ANY BETTER A SITUATION? WOO BARONS! INTERNAL CONFLICT IN THE GOVERNMENT IS A FUN IDEA!

  6. The best pleasure I get from Gender Wars is the decline of couples who think it’s absolutely romantic to kiss in the middle of the hallways, forcing everyone to be involved in their beautiful scene (I’m talking to you, Couples A, B, and C in the English Hall before 6th period). Forget Gender Wars, we should replace it with Sex Awareness. THAT would be hilarious. (I am completely kidding)
