The District Art Show, held on March 23 at the district office, showcased some of school district’s best art pieces, including works of several Fountain Valley students.

The Barons stole the limelight and took home 12 of the 24 medals offered.

Medal winners include 2-D Art students Valerie Chang, Vina Vu, and Jessica Pappas; 3-D Art students Jay Bonthius, Alice Wang, Hayden Mau, Chris Salazar, Breanna Callihan, and Phuong Lee; and Photography student Jordan Millington.  3-D student Makala Asch earned the medal for Best in Show.

The art show displayed works in different mediums, including paintings, photos, 3-D pieces, ceramics, and animation.

“I was very surprised when I found out I placed,” says Jessica Pappas (’12), whose emotive prismacolor-pencil-on-bristol-board entered piece “Jewel” deviates from her usual happier style.  “I have a deep respect for much of the artwork of my peers in Mr. Eich’s AP art class and Art 2 class and I was both excited and surprised when I found out I beat some of them.”

“I’m really happy,” says Photography student Jordan Millington (’12).  “I wanted to show the innocence of my brother and other youth.  It seemed to come across to the judges, so I couldn’t be happier.”

“When I walked through the doors to the District Office I was immediately scanning for my piece,” says Breanna Callihan (’12), whose 3-D piece “Geo-Giraffe” now stands in a display by the beach, near the Electric Chair.  “I was so happy to see a shiny little metal beside it. I literally jumped up and down rather obnoxiously. I was really excited about the whole thing and I couldn’t get over it.”

College professors acted as judges  in order to ensure impartiality when scoring the students’ works of art. The tags labeling the pieces were removed during judging, although they were replaced in time for the opening of the gala. The pieces were displayed for public viewing for about one and a half weeks.

“I had a great time and was completely astounded with the talent high school students had and the artwork people were capable of creating,” says Valerie Chang (’14).  Chang’s 3-D piece depicting different human emotions consisted of three hands done in different mediums: prismacolor marker, black ink, and graphite.  “It was great to see the amazing talent our school district had!”
