End of Boys’ Volleyball Season Review

The end of the season of boys’ volleyball was marked by their senior night against Newport Harbor. Despite the tough loss, our boys had a good season with a strong start. They hit the ground running against Ocean View High School and started out the season with a win. Then on their first tournament at Redondo, they placed 7th out of 32 teams and continue their record of a 4-0 record. Overall, the first half of our Baron’s season, they put up a good fight with a record of 11 wins to 4 losses.
As the season continued, the 5 game matches and back to back tournaments began to take its toll on the team. As first year varsity players, they were not accustomed to the increase of physical demand when it came to the varsity level. Despite their talent, they began to wear down due to their lack of experience of playing at the varsity level.
The team began to struggle after their win against Sage Hill. During the OC championships, the boys did their best; however, it seemed as if they began to clock out.
Our boys seemed to struggle in the first game of their matched by digging themselves into a 5 to 6 point deficit in the beginning and then pushing into overdrive to make up for lost points. Although their hustle brought them back into the game to catch up, they became slightly demoralized by the first loss.
Game after game the Barons fought valiantly in each match, but in every match they did the same thing. They dug themselves into a hole and forced themselves to ship away point by point to catch up again. But, by the time they got to 1 or 2 points closer, they did so too late and the other team had already carried all the momentum.
For a first year varsity team, however, they did very well against other school that had all club players and varsity returners. We can expect a comeback from our boys as they hit summer with more practice and training for the next season to come.
