The Vietnamese Student Association, along with various other Orange County schools, attended the 20th annual Little Saigon Clean-up at the Asian Garden Mall on Saturday.

The FVHS VSA club volunteered in groups and walked along pre-determined routes throughout Little Saigon to pick up trash.

“I was surprised at all the trash that people just littered and it helped me realize how much impact a ‘little’ trash would have on the look of a place,” said Alvin Ngo (’15).

Hundreds of volunteers from other schools also attended the clean-up. In addition to Fountain Valley High School, Edison, La Quinta, Garden Grove, Irvine, Santiago, Marina, Rancho Alamitos, and several others were present.

Before the event started, attendants had the opportunity to shop at the mall for food, boba, and an assortment of items such as pencils, candy, and other knick-knacks.

Color-coded name-tags which determined a person’s assigned group were passed out to all the volunteers. After joining the separate groups, several games such as Evolution and Huggy Bears were played before the walking began.

Participants had an opportunity to socialize and make new friends while picking up trash as they walked for over an hour.

Afterwards, free sandwiches and coconut drinks were handed out to everybody.

“Although walking around and picking up trash was tiring, I still had fun with the people I was with,” said Vivian Ha (’15), “I would certainly come back next year because I got to reunite with old friends from other schools, and got to meet new people as well.”
