Barons voice their opinions on marriage equality

The Human Rights Campaign’s symbol for marriage equality.

FVHS students began changing their profile pictures on Facebook en masse, using social media as a mouthpiece for their opinions on March 25th.

The Facebook trend is a response to the Supreme Court Hearings on gay marriage.

The Human Rights Campaign, an organization dedicated to marriage equality, called for action through the social media website, urging people to voice their support through their profile pictures. The HRC shared a red version of their logo — an equal sign — and people all over the country did the same.

Many students’ agreed with the HRC’s message, and changed their profile pictures.

“We are all people, and we should all be treated equal no matter if you’re gay or straight,” said Jasmine Tran (‘14).

However, many students disagreed. They said that Prop 8 should not be repealed, citing their religious beliefs.

One student who requested anonymity maintained that “marriage is between a woman and a man. If gay marriage was passed, it would disrupt many religions and many people will begin questioning their religions.”

Despite their personal viewpoints, most students believe that the Supreme Court will be in favor of marriage equality simply because of the social climate.

Denise Avent (‘13), who is a student-activist for the LGBT community, of which she is a member, believes “[denying] gays the right to marry is unconstitutional and that there will be a lot of happily wed gay couples when this is all over.”
