Baron Banner students attended the Southern California Journalism Education Write-Off, held at CalState Long Beach, last weekend.

Students entered in different categories, such as Feature, News, Opinion, Sports and Critical Review. Photographers submitted pictures for News and Feature Photography.

Upon arrival, students dispersed to conferences and wrote for one hour. After judges read over the articles, awards were handed out to those who placed in their respective categories.

Baron Banner did great overall, with four out of five students placing in the top ten. Ashley Le (’15) received first place in News Photography, Tyler Ratzlaff (’13) received third in Feature Photography, Adrien Ha (’13) placed 10th in News, Jackie Liu (’14) received third in Feature, and Rachel Phillips (’14) placed 15th in Feature.

“Competing in SCJEA helped me a lot with making decisions because I had to chose only two of my best pictures in a small amount of time,” Le said. “It’s also a great chance to have your works judged by professionals. Overall, I’m really proud of how Baron Banner did.”
