Board members pass on the torch

As the year draws to an end, old board began selecting next year’s board members.

Clubs such as Key Club, Joni’s Angels and KIWIN’s have already elected next year’s board.  Other clubs, such as Friday Night Live, are in the process of hosting interviews.  CSF and NHS have also announced next year’s board members.

Usually, the results of these board interviews are announced at club banquets, which usually take place late May, after AP testing, or early June.

Once these positions are filled, next year’s presidents will attend their first ICC meeting of their presidency before the 2012-2013 year ends.

Graduating seniors must be replaced next year.  The typical position that needs to be replaced is the position of club president, which is often the most sought-after position.

Some clubs offer opportunities to prospective board members to showcase their abilities.  For example, CSF’s Shadow-a-Board-Members allows club members to carry out various jobs that a board member would normally complete.  The efficiency, quality, and dedication with which a task is fulfilled serves as the assessment that current board members use to judge their competency.

Prospective board members can also showcase their abilities during the board interview.  There, their ability to communicate with their peers is assessed.

Also, prospective board members are normally asked questions such as “What makes you qualified for this position?” or “How will you manage your time in order to dedicate yourself to this club?”

“[Selecting board members is] difficult, with the candidates being very hard to select [too] because the club is so young!” said Dario Resendiz (’13), current president of Interact Club.  “But I am glad that [next year’s board] will have the support of other Interact Clubs in the district, a chance I did not receive as president, so I wish them the best of luck!”

For seniors, this is a bittersweet time in their FVHS club careers.  They’re happy to pass on the torch, yet are sad to be leaving their clubs behind as they graduate.

“Being president was amazing, stressful, joyous, and exhausting at the same time,” said Resendiz.  “I will miss leading meetings, but I look forward to starting again as an Interact member in college and working my way up again!”
