Environmental Science students showcase projects

By Rachel Phillips

AP Environmental Science students gathered to present their poster projects which they had been working throughout the school year on last Thursday.

Each year, students work throughout the second semester to conduct an experiment or observational study that tackles an issue in the environment around them. Topics usually range  from the concentration of algae in a particular marine area to the waste effectiveness of single-use cups in fast food restaurants.

The event lasted for approximately an hour, wherein each student spoke for half an hour about their project, presenting it to visitors, family, and other students attending the event. Many teachers offered their students extra credit for attendance. Refreshments like cookies and coffee were available for early arrivals.

Meagan Faller (’13) presents her research project.

Meagan Faller (‘13), whose project focused on waste management at several local eateries, said, “I thought this project was one of the coolest things I’ve done all year.”

Samar Saad (‘14), who presented her project on biodiversity in three different marine environments, stated, “I think that students really get a hands-on feel for science. I hope that everyone who attended learned something and enjoyed watching the presentations.”
