Field hockey endures a week of losses

In the opening week of league play, girls field hockey faced off against the Westminster Lions on the home field last Wednesday, Sept. 25, and lost, 1-2, in overtime. The next day, Thursday, the Barons lost again to Newport Harbor, 1-5.

Although field hockey played hard throughout the entire game against Westminster, even playing into overtime, they lost.

The girls started off the game on the offensive and varsity player Nikki Coronado (’15) scored within ten minutes of the first half. With the lead at 1-0 after after halftime, the Barons came onto the field ready to keep up the intensity.

The defensive line was made up of Stephanie Pham (’14), Cora Barras (’16), and Cara Troutman (’15), and goalie Ryann Callaghan (’15) kept goal after goal cleared. Unfortunately, Westminster scored in the second half of the game. At the end of the hour game, with the tie, 1-1, coaches on both teams put forth their seven ablest players for ten minutes of seven versus seven, overtime play.

Although it was a low note to start the season off with, the Barons were given a chance to up their game for the forthcoming season. Varsity Coach Allison Renth said, “We were able to see what our weaker points were and improve on that.”

The next day, the girls played the field in another home game against Newport Harbor and lost 1-5. Again, the Barons were the first to score and held their lead until halftime, but Newport came back fast and hard in the second half.  The Barons’ goal was scored quickly at the start of the game by Cami Stevens (’14) in a breakaway play.

Renth added, “We’ve progressively been improving and learning to work together as a team…there is always room for improvement.”

Field hockey’s next home game is against Huntington Beach on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
