After placing last in league last season with a record of 1-7-2, girls varsity soccer hopes to recover and show better performances this year.

Girls soccer’s first game of pre-season brought home their first victory with a comfortable margin of 2-0. Both goals were scored in the first half  of the game and by Valerie Holler (’15) and Brittney Stevens (’14).

The first half started with Fountain Valley’s pouring attack to Savanna’s side. The lady Barons showed great connections throughout the field as they continuously tested the defensive line of their opponent.

The hosts’ pressure eventually paid off when Holler gave Fountain Valley the lead after a powerful strike. The second goal was quickly added after a well team-work piece, ending with a fine goal from Stevens, scoring 2-0 for the Barons.

From then on, Fountain Valley was well on top. Under head coach Scott Goldman’s instruction, the girls showed good communication as well as determination. Savanna had gone forward and looked for goal, but the Barons defensive line did well and cleared out all their opponent’s chances as well as performed many counter attacks.

The second half saw Fountain Valley’s complete dominant over Savanna and a bigger margin was expected. However, the Barons’ offensive line could not take advantage of their many chances. Savanna goalkeeper two times denied the fierce free kicks from Makena Walker (’16) while Jackie Garrett (’15) striked at the end of the game and the shot was just inches away from goal. 2-0 was the final result.

“We were able to see the things that we need to work on. We were happy with the win but just like any preseason, we are gonna use that game to help improve our strategy and our skill for the rest of the season,” said assistant coach Salma Perez.

The girls will continue their preparation for Sunset league throughout December. Their first league game will be away against Los Alamitos on Thursday, Jan. 9 and their first home league game will be against Huntington Beach on Tuesday. Jan. 14.
