On Tuesday, the Lady Barons basketball team played their first match of the Sunset League season. The Barons lost to the Oilers, 31-60.

The first quarter started off pretty well with a score of 5-12 and a 3-pointer shot by Andie Kristinat (’17).

“I thought the first half was pretty good, we wanted to slow it down and we usually speed up the game as much as possible,” said coach Craig, “but against Huntington, we decided to try something different.”

The team did well on defense and tried to keep Huntington Beach from scoring. But by the end of the first half, the score was 8-23.

“We watched film and specialized plays for this team, we did well with the plays that we learned, but we could’ve executed it better and taken care of the ball better” said varsity player, Martine Caponera (’14).

In the third quarter the score picked up to 17-39. Ari Jacobsen (’15) had a steal and a layup and scored four of the nine points in the quarter.

“When we tried to play our style in the fourth, we were able to get easier looks at the basket, move the ball, make our back cuts, but it was too late,” said coach Clark.

In the last several minutes of the fourth quarter, the team made a major decision to switch out all five players with the bench. “We wanted to get everyone else into the game and have a chance to play since we were kind of out of it,” said coach Craig.

Caponera scored 5 of the 14 points made in that quarter, in the few minutes that she was in the game. J.V. player Lisa Torres (’15) continued to fill in for injured members of the team and made 2 points.

“The last unit that went in, the last five girls, played extremely hard,” said coach Clark, “They executed offensively for the most part.”

Girls basketball plays their next home game next Monday against Marina High School.
