Here are your morning announcements for Monday, March 31, 2014…     

Attention seniors – your Senior Assembly is this Wed, April 2nd.  Report to the gym at 8:30am, you will be checked in.  Come hear all the details you need to know about graduation, grad night, pictures, pick up your Graduation Announcements and much more!

Students – do you know where you go tomorrow and what time? Due to the Smarter Balanced Assessments, everybody’s schedule will be very different from tomorrow through Friday. Juniors will be testing at 8am on two of those days. Seniors have a meeting on April 2nd, Freshmen, Sophomores and Seniors start at 10:00 am most of those days. 0 period students have classes on some days but not others. If you don’t know your own personal schedule, spend some time looking at the schedule posted on the school’s website and/or ask your English teacher. Here we go Barons!

Barons – Vocal Music’s Spring Showcase is TONIGHT, starting at 7 p.m. at Shoreline Church, on the corner of Ellis and Ward.   All seven of our choirs will be presenting their competition and festival music and it will be mighty impressive!    All of our seniors will be recognized as well.    Don’t miss this opportunity to see our choirs at their absolute best.   Tickets are just $8 for students and are on sale at Shoreline before the concert begins.

This Friday Night… LIVE! Dancing with the Stars!! 5, 6, 7, 8 come watch your teachers compete in our own dancing with the stars competition Friday night in the gym. That’s right, your teachers are going to get their “grooves on” this Friday.  Contact a football team member or a member of our world famous dance team for tickets.  The money raised is going to a good cause so please participate in this event which promises to be very entertaining.

Seniors, are your College Acceptance Letters arriving? Share the great news and tell us where you might go to college. Print out a copy of ALL of your acceptance letters and bring them to Mrs. Wakeman in the Career Center. We will post them on the new College Wall located in our Guidance area. Here are your morning announcements for Friday, March 28, 2014

Congratulations to the boys track team for sweeping Los Al on all levels. The varsity boys won 71 to 61.  The girls team beat Los Al on frosh/soph, JV, and narrowly lost girls varsity 61 to 74.

Congratulations to the Boys Golf Team for their victory over Huntington Beach 193 to 195. The Barons were led by senior captains Jordan Meas and Jeffrey Gathmann. The Barons are now 7 and 2.  Keep it going Barons.

Congratulations to the dive team for their performance at the first meet of the season on Thursday! Erin-Taylor Allen, Mackenzie Brashier, Sydney Benjamin, and Shelby Randall; great job ladies!

Congratulations to the Freshman Baseball team for their 4-1 victory over Huntington Beach on Wednesday.  Pitcher Cohl Staffa dominated a powerful Oiler line-up, allowing only 3 hits and throwing a complete game.  Nathan Medellin drove in 2 runs, including the game winner.  Justin Yang’s pinch hit single drove in 2 runs in extra innings to seal the victory for the Barons.

Congratulations to the March B4L winners!  They are Matt Messick, Connor Pocta, Kain Houston, Tien To, Feruz Ibrahim, Bradford Fuiava, Kaleb Hoppe, Dominic Cunneen, Bill Pham and Amanda Schoon!

Seniors, are your College Acceptance Letters arriving? Share the great news and tell us where you might go to college. The PTSA is awarding scholarships to college bound seniors.  Applications are now available in the College & Career Center, in the library.  In order to qualify the student must be a PTSA member by April 1, 2014.  PTSA membership forms are available in the administration building.  Completed membership forms with the $10 membership fee, should be put in an envelope and left in the PTSA mail slot by April 1st at 3:00 p.m.  Scholarship applications are due to Mrs. Wakeman in the College & Career Center by May 16th at 3:00 p.m.

The cafeteria is hiring dependable student workers.  If you are interested please come to the Faculty Dining Room Monday March 31st between 8-8:30.

Here are your morning announcements for Wednesday, March 26, 2014…     

This past weekend 40 high schools flocked to our school for the CADTD State Dance Competition. It was amazing! Over 3000 performers and spectators spread out and enjoyed our beautiful campus. Not only was our dance team the host in directing teams around campus they were also competing. This past weekend was a historic victory for the FVHS Dance Team. The Officers’ routine placed 2nd and both our soloists, Amanda Kolb and Alyssa Loeffelman made it into the top 10 solo finalist. They also broke a team record by receiving  three  1st place trophies for the medium hip hop, large hip hop and character routines. And that’s not all!! Combining our totals for all of our hip hop routines earned us the sweep stakes award and scholarship in the Hip Hop category!!  A huge congratulations to the dance team and good luck in this upcoming weekends USA national Competition!!

FV Lady Barons Varsity Softball Beats Kennedy 4 – 0.  The Lady Barons had timely hitting by Audrey Beck with a single, Triple, a RBI and Scored a run.  Kelli Tatum with 2 singles a double and a RBI, Taylor Golden with 2 singles a RBI and scored a run.  Randi Fehser had a double and scored a run. Victoria Ellard had a RBI and Audrey Lansdown had a single and scored a run.  Madeling Domingo Doubled.  Everyone contributed on defense and Madison Weathers got the win giving up 3 hits with 5 strike outs along the way.  It was definitely a team effort. Way to go ladies keep it going.  Go Barons!!!

Our swim team had their league opener against Los Alamitos yesterday.  All levels brought their best with Open level standout swims from Elaine Tran and Kaleb Nordfelt and the JV top performers were Kristen Curtiss and Khiem Huynh.  The Varsity boys showed depth in our sprinting by placing 1st with a C.I.F. qualifying time (Dalton Kenefick, Ethan Pham, Josh Bernardin, and Justin Nguyen) & 3rd in the 200 free relay.  The varsity girls ran a clinic on the reigning Sunset League champs, beating them 93 – 77.  Lead by our senior studs Sarah Yao, Makenna DuBois, and Katelyn Farrow, the girls were in control the entire meet.  We have our first home meet of the season and it is the game of the week, next Tuesday against a young and quick Huntington Beach squad.

Congratulations to the varsity Boys’ Golf Team for finishing in 2nd place on the Long Beach Milikan Invitational. The boys missed winning by only one stoke. They were led by Jordan Meas and Ryan Cross. Good job Barons.

The FVHS Surf Team dominated last Saturday at the CCSA competition.  John Hoyt, Eric Tello, Nathan Davis and Riley Donohoo had outstanding first place finishes in their heats, along with Dustin Santana ripping to 2nd place.  Riley Anderson and Mckenzie Kohanek both tore it up to 2nd place in the women’s heats.   John Hoyt, Eric Tello and Dustin Santana destroyed their way through finals all with 1st place finishes,  with a strong follow up from Nathan Davis in 3rd, and Riley Donohoo in 4th place.  In the women’s  finals,  Riley Anderson continued to rip her way to another stellar 2nd place finish, followed up by Mckenzie Kohanek with a strong 3rd.  Nice job FVHS Surf Team!

Mark your calendars for some great upcoming performances. The JV Color Guard will be at John F. Kennedy High School this Friday, performing at 7:30pm. The Varsity Guard is at Arcadia High School on Saturday, and performs at 5pm. The FVRR Percussion Ensemble, who has gone undefeated this season, will attempt to continue their red hot winning streak this Saturday at Great Oak High School. They are performing at 6:45pm. If you haven’t seen this show yet, it’s not to be missed! Good luck this weekend FVRR!

The Royal Regiment Lunch Time concert series has been a great success! The Symphonic Band, String Chamber, and String Orchestra all gave great performances on Monday and Tuesday! Today the FVRR will conclude its Lunch Time concert series with the award winning Wind Ensemble. Bring your lunch today over to the grassy knoll and enjoy a great free concert.

Congratulations to the following students winning top Honors at the District Art show last week:  These individuals were selected from over 300 entrees, a fabulous showing for the Visual Arts Department.
Adam VanLieshout received best of show 3/D. Lizzie Lignan recieved Best in show Photo. Ethelynn Hong received both Judges Choice Awards.

Medal of Distinction went to: Kaitlyn Hoppe, Cory Magill, Julie Brashear, Amber Bragdon, Ian McKibben, and Quan Le.

And Teacher’s Choice went to: Kaleb Hoppe, Samar Saad , Ciera Keller, and Amber Bragdon.

 

On Friday, freshman pitcher Ryan Foster was dominate as he held a powerful Los Alamitos offense scoreless for 4 innings.  Andrew Sanchez drove in Justin Yang for the game winning RBI as the Barons defeated Los Al 5-4 in extra innings.

The Royal Regiment Percussion Ensemble took home yet another gold medal at last weekends’ competition. They continue to be undefeated this season! Keep it up Percussion Ensemble!

Come on out to the Grassy Knoll today at Lunch to listen to the beautiful sounds of the Fountain Valley Symphonic Band, led by our very own, Mr. Matthews! The Royal Regiment concert series will start today with the Symphonic Band. Tomorrow will showcase the String Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble, and on Wednesday will be the award winning FV Wind Ensemble. Bring your lunch and enjoy a great concert.

Unfortunately, FVHS hockey team lost their semi final game with Mater Dei last night with a score of 6-8. Goals scored by Brandon Ha, Ian Bast and Cody Sizemore

Here are your morning announcements for Thursday, March 20, 2014…    

Congratulations and high four to Mr. Sean Ziebarth who was selected as a Teacher of the Year for the Huntington Beach Union High School District.  Mr. Ziebarth teaches AP English Language and Composition and serves as the advisor for print, video and online journalism. He is the advisor for the BBN and Baron Banner and is also the school’s webmaster. Mr. Ziebarth is also the coordinator for Instructional Rounds which involves teachers watching other teachers for professional growth. Congratulations Mr. Z – well earned.

Congratulations to junior Joey Yonkers for his selection as the Fountain Valley Rotary Club’s Student of the Month for March. Keep up the good work and positive attitude Joey!

Congratulations to Sutton Edwards and Daniel Rosica for being named Fountain Valley’s Athletes of Character and Honor at last night’s Orange County Athletic Directors Association winter banquet. Daniel and Sutton were chosen from all of our schools varsity athletes for their exemplary character, both on and off the field. Congrats to Daniel and Sutton for this prestigious award.

The Track team had great performances at the 2014 Redondo Nike Invitational.  The boys were led by David Abraham and Hunter Gulino in the mile running 4:18 and 4:22. Dakarai ran 11.2 in the 100 meters and jumped 21 feet in the long jump. Patrick Huynh ran 40.8 in the 300 hurdles and Dustin Huynh ran 15.22 in the 110 hurdles.  The girls were led by Amber Bragdon running 11:02 for 2 miles, Marianna Chavez ran 5:15 in the mile, Annalese Doerr ran 59 seconds in the 400, and Crystal Eckman ran 12.5 in the 100 meters.  The track teams are currently undefeated in the Sunset league on all levels.

FV Girls Softball shut out Laguna Beach on Tuesday.  Madi Weathers got the shutout win and Liana Castro the save, while Kelli Tatum hit a double and a Grand Slam.  Tori Ellard and Randi Fehser  also had doubles.  RBI’s by Tori Ellard, Randi Fehser, Kelli Tatum and Taylor Golden.  As a team the lady Barons hit well and played good defense.

Congratulations to the Varsity Baseball team for their 9-3 victory over Villa Park in the final game of the Loara Tournament.  Dillon Persinger led off the game with a solo homerun. Brock Lundquist added another homerun in the first inning giving him 3 for the year. JT Navarro and Willie Aguilar continued their great starts. The Barons travel to Los Al to open Sunset League play.

Congratulations to the Freshman Baseball on their 21 to 6 victory over Segerstrom.  Ryan Foster led off the game with his first career high school home run to give the Barons the early lead.  Bryce Ash hit a three run home run, the first of his high school career.  The Barons are now 5 and 1 on the year and will face Los Alamitos in the Sunset League opener tomorrow.

Hat’s off to the JV Baseball team for its dominating 7 – 0 performance over Segerstrom. The Barons were lead by strong pitching performances by Gavin McCullough and Kyle Kogami, who held their opponent to only 2 hits throughout the game. The Barons host their first Sunset league game of the season against Los Al on Friday here at home, so come out and support your team.

Boys Golf beat Long Beach Millikan.  The boys were led by Chris Feltman and Ryan Cross.  FV Golf is now 5 and 0. Keep it going Barons!

The next B4L raffle will be in the bowl this Friday at lunch.  Ten lucky winners will be drawn and get their choice of a $25 gift card!  Were you nominated?  Check out the list on the Supervision window. All nominees for March are listed there.  Winners MUST be present to win!

March Madness Finals are today at lunch!  Come to the gym to see who will be crowned the next March Madness champions of Fountain Valley High School.

The cafeteria is hiring dependable student workers to work in the cafeteria during lunch time.  Come to the faculty dining room Monday morning at 8am for an interview and more information.

The Ronald McDonald House club will be collecting pop tabs from each classroom throughout the week during lunch as well as after 5th and 6th. Winning classes will be determined after all pop tabs have been collected.  Thanks Barons for donating!

 

Here are your morning announcements for Monday, March 17, 2014…     

Over 800 Wrestlers from around the state competed  this past weekend in the California Grade State Championships. 11 Fountain Valley wrestlers were medal winners and 3 Juniors made it to the finals. Andrew Morgan placed 2nd and Stone Escobedo and Ben Madrid are CA State Champions! Congratulations on becoming the first 2 Baron wrestlers to win a State Championship!

Congratulations to the Freshman Baseball Team for their 5 to 4 victory over North Torrance on Saturday.  Cohl Staffa did an Outstanding job pitching and Justin Mazzone had a triple and a base hit that drove in the winning run for the Barons.  The Freshman are now 4 and 1.

A big congratulations goes out to our own FV Percussion section, and our JV and Varsity Color Guards! All three of these Royal Regiment groups took first place at last Saturday’s competition’s. The percussion section is dominating southern California, as they continue their undefeated run!

Attention all Students and Staff. Have you ever wanted to hear the great sounds of the FV String Orchestra or Wind Ensemble, but never had the time to attend a concert? Well we have the solution! The Royal Regiment is proud to announce it’s Lunch Time Concert Series! Concerts will begin next Monday. Stay tuned for more details.

March Madness semi-finals continue TODAY.  Make sure to come to the gym to find out who will make it to the finals!

Attention sophomores and juniors…Are you interested in staying fit and healthy next school year and don’t have a gym membership?  There is a new elective PE class for Juniors and Seniors next year.  The class will consist of Weight lifting, working out in the cardio room, creating an individualized workout plan, games and much more.  Make sure you sign up for the Weight Training Elective during registration if you are interested.  Talk to Mr. Woodbury or Mrs. Smith if you have any questions.

Advanced Placement fees are due.  Payment can be made online today through March 31st or at the Financial Office March 18th through 21st.

Attention Seniors, please check the diploma list posted on the windows outside the Administration building.  The way your name is printed on the list will be the same way it will be printed on the diploma.  If your name is missing or needs to be corrected – see the registrar.

TEDx is back at FVHS for a second amazing show! It will be held next Friday, March 21, at the Community Center across the street at 8 PM. Tickets will be sold for $7 starting Thursday outside Room 410. Get a discount ticket to TED at the door if you enjoy the Theater Showcase before! Get your tickets before they sell out; there’s only 100!

Hey Barons – are you interested in planning events for your school?  Having a leadership role? Being a part of student government?  Want to join ASB?  Applications are now available in the Activities office and on FVHS.com and FVHSActivities.com.

Coronet Award applications must be submitted to the Department Coordinator or filled out online no later than this Friday, March 21, 2014.

Here are your morning announcements for Friday, March 14, 2014…     

The Royal Regiment Color Guards are doing great this year! You heard that correctly. The team has grown so large that they had to split into 2 teams for their indoor season. Both Guards will be performing tomorrow at South Hills High School. Junior Varsity performs at 3:30 in the afternoon, and Varsity will perform at 8 o’clock. Hope to see you there!

Another big Congratulations goes to the Royal Regiment Percussion Ensemble! They took home another gold medal at last Sunday’s competition in Ontario. They will be performing tomorrow at Aliso Niguel High School at 4 o’clock! Come and check out this award winning show before the season ends!

Congratulations to the Freshman Baseball team for their five to nothing victory over Ocean View High School.  The Barons were led by pitchers Travis Behrens, Trevor Staffieri and Miguel Larios as they held the Seahawks to just 1 hit in the shutout.  The Freshman team is three and one after their first 4 games.

Congratulations to Varsity Boys Tennis for beating Irvine HS 12 – 6.  Darrin Nguyen and Parker Braverman won all of their 3 matches. Go Barons!

The FVHS Surf Team had a stellar day last Saturday at the CCSA contest.  The surfers had some impressive finishes including, Dustin Santana and Eric Tello in 1st place, Delaney Millican, Nathan Davis and Riley Donohoo with 2nd place, and Mackenzie Kohanek, Riley Anderson and John Hoyt with 3rd place finishes and Julia Luna with a strong 4th place standing.

Attention Seniors eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy.  Have you turned in your Seal of Biliteracy application, along with a copy of your transcript and 11th grade CST scores?  See your current World Language teacher or your Guidance Specialist for a Seal of Biliteracy application. Applications are due in the box outside Mrs. Peterson’s office on Friday, March 28th.

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys Golf Team for their 3rd place finish at the J Serra Invitational. The Barons were led by Jordan Meas, Jeffrey Gathmann and Ryan Cross. The Barons also beat Estancia yesterday, the Barons are now 3 and 0.  Keep it up Barons!

Congratulations to Frosh/Soph Boys Tennis for defeating Corona del Mar!

All levels had amazing swims at the Northwood and Wilson tri-meet.  Elaine Tran and Rachelle Speckler were our girls Open division top scorers, Ryan Cheung and Orlandi Bui brought a few top finishes to the boys Open division, Veronica Dang, Sara Tran, Andrew Quang, and Khoa Huynh helped the JV squads place 2nd overall, and we had 3 freshman girl standouts in the Varsity division:  Kennedy Hood, Samantha Soriano, and Monet Favreau who were major contributors to the Varsity Girls 1st place finish.  The Varsity Boys are starting the year a few steps ahead of last year’s season and are looking forward to our Santa Barbara travel trip this weekend.

A new recycling program will soon be implemented on campus. New cardboard bins will be placed on campus after school today and students can put anything in the bins except chip bags, food waste, and wood. Plastic water bottles, unwanted papers, and more can be placed in the bins with profits from recycled materials benefiting Sophomore Commission. Support a great cause and feel good about recycling to better the environment.

The wrestlers finished off the season with a great showing at the State Finals placing 40th out of 296 schools. Bryant Vasquez won 2 matches defeating the CIF Southern Section Champion and juniors Ben Madrid And Stone Escobedo were a match away from medaling. We won 12 matches total and Junior Andrew Morgan placed 7th in the State! Congratulations to all our wrestlers on a memorable season!

Congratulations to the varsity baseball team for a 3-2 win vs Pacifica. The offense was led by Dillon Persinger and Justin Navarro with Junior Aguilar providing the game winning hit that put the Barons up 3-2. Scott Schultz threw 6 innings for his first win and JT Navarro notched his first save. The Barons play tomorrow at 300pm at home versus Lakewood. This is a quarterfinal game for the Loara Tournament. Please come out and support the team. Thanks to Mr Walker, Mr Schultz and Mr Papendick for coming out to Pacifica. The team wants to say a big THANK YOU to you guys for coming out and supporting.

Please plan to be at school both days. This is a graduation requirement that you want to fulfill your sophomore year, the only opportunity to make-up the exams if missed is May 13th and 14th.  School administrators will visit 10th grade World History classes next week to explain the testing process, including details regarding test locations.

Coronet Award applications are available from the Department Coordinator in the department for which you wish to be nominated, in the Activities Office, or fill out the Google form online @fvhs.com.   All applications must be submitted to the Department Coordinator or filled out online no later than Friday, March 21, 2014.

Congratulations to the varsity baseball team for a 10 to 4 victory against El Toro high school. The Barons offense led the way. Daniel Patzlaff, Junior Aguilar, Justin Navarro led the Barons offense. Strong pitching performances by Tyler Nash, Hunter Margain, Willie Aguilar and Justin Cobb held El Toro to 4 runs. The Barons play tomorrow at 11am at Pacifica HS. Congratulations to Tyanna Bui and Bianca Singer for being chosen as March Seniors of the Month!  Your hard work and dedication has truly paid off!

Congratulations to the boys golf team for starting their season with a victory over Long Beach Millikan. The Barons were led by Joey Huynh who shot a 38.  Yesterday the boys beat Rancho Cucamonga. The Barons were led by senior Ryan Cross. The Varsity Golf team is now 2 and 0.  The JV Boys Golf team won their match yesterday against a very good Estancia HS team.  The Barons were led by Brooks Clarkson, Aaron Hernandez, Dustin Tran, and Evan Gonzales.  Keep up the good work boys.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations Barons, you have all contributed to a successful Pennies for Patients drive. Together, we collected $2,011.71 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Ms. Munoz’s class won the Olive Garden Party with $254.14 being donated and elected to pass on the prize to 2nd place winner  Ms. Hollingsworth’s class, which raised an impressive $214.86.  Coming in 3rd and 4th place  was Mrs. Chaicharee’s class raising $133.90 and  Mrs. Zeigler’s room with $182.79.  To the 3rd and 4th place winners, The Health and Cancer Awareness Society is planning on giving you a special treat as a thank you for raising so much money.  Thank you again to all of you who donated.

Congratulations to Varsity Boys Tennis for beating Laguna Hills High School 15 to 3.  The JV team also won 18 to 0.  Great job Boys Tennis.

Varsity Baseball split with Sonora yesterday in a double header. The Barons won the first game 3 to nothing. Scott Schultz, Justin Navarro and Justin Cobb combined to shutout Sonora in the first game. The offense was led by Dillon Persinger and Junior Aguilar who had two hits a piece. Brock Lundquist drove in 2 runs. The Barons play Thursday night at 700pm at Glover Stadium in Anaheim for the opener in the Loara Tournament. The Barons are the #1 seed in the tournament. We hope to see you there!

Reflections is a national art based competition sponsored by PTA.  Three students from each category were chosen to move forward to the next level.  Michelle Wickstrom  received an Award of Excellence for her entry titled “Dream Machine” in the Visual Arts category.   Michelle’s artwork was selected to move forward to the next level of competition at the district level!  She was honored on Friday Feb 9th at the Annual Founder’s Day Luncheon.  Way to go Michelle!   Other winners include, Amanda Graff, Visual Arts and Christine Nguyen, Literature.  Both who received an Award of Merit for their entries and Mackenzie Kohanek received an Honorable Mention for her Literature entry. Congratulations to all of our winners!

For the first time since 1978, four FVHS wrestlers qualified for the California State Championships in Bakersfield! The CIF State meet is one of the only true state championships in the nation to have one division representing over 1400 schools and wrestlers. Congratulations to Juniors Andrew Morgan, Stone Escobedo, Ben Madrid, and Senior Bryant Vasquez! Each of these Baron wrestlers are now among the top athletes in Fountain Valley Wrestling’s Hall of Fame.

Attention all Baron athletes: you and your parents are invited to attend our Playing Sports in College Night, tonight at 7 p.m. in the gym. This year the focus of the evening will be on “The True Facts about College Athletic Recruiting.” Our guest speaker will be noted author and former college coach Jack Renkins of Recruiting Realities. Hey students, teachers and staff, do you have a special talent that you would like to take to the stage? It’s time for auditions for the District Wide Talent Show.  Applications are due today, Monday, March 3. Any talent will do, singing, dancing, telling a joke…or maybe you are the next Steven Speilberg or Alfred Hitchcock, then the Film Festival is for you. You should enter our District Surf City Film Festival. Applications and films are also due today. You can get applications for both of these events in the Activities Office.

Seniors who are attending the GWC and or OCC field trip should turn in their permission slips to the Career Center today. You can also sign up to take the SOAR Placement Test. The test will be offered on March 24, 25 and 26.

Sophomores, juniors and seniors come and attend our Out of State College Fair  tomorrow night,  Tuesday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. We will be hosting colleges from North Carolina, Nevada, Colorado, Oklahoma and Arizona to name a few. Many of these colleges are still accepting applications for Fall 2014 and do not have impacted programs or majors. See you Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for the Out of State College Fair!
