Last Tuesday, the Fountain Valley track team faced off against Newport Harbor, where they dominated the competition on all levels. The Barons showed impressive progress for only the beginning of the season by giving strong performances in all events, and many personal records were achieved.

On the distance team, Amber Bragdon (’14) won the girls varsity race in the 1600 by running a personal best of 5:07, and in the boys varsity race for the 800, David Abraham (’14) won the race with a PR time of 1:59.12, with Hunter Gulino (’14) right behind him with a 1:59.15.

“The team is progressing well,” said Mariana Chavez (’16), who received third place in the girls varsity 1600 by running a PR of 5:16. “Everyone is performing well and it is going to be a fast season.”

The pole vaulters faced a competitive field in the dual, but were also pleased with their performances, and are excited for the rest of the season.

“We have some really good pole vaulters this year and I expect us to do well in league.,” stated Erica Davis (’14), who was second place in the girls varsity pole vault.

Other notable performances included Heather Cottle (’15), who PR’d and received second place in the girls varsity 300m hurdles by running a 46.92, one of the fastest times in school history for the event.

Results for the sprinters varied. Tram Dinh (’15) said, “I think its been really good for the team overall, but just like for some individuals it wasn’t as good as other days.”

However, the Barons feel confident of continuing to dominate  their races for the rest of the season, and are especially excited for Friday to perform at the Redondo Nike Invitational.

“Redondo’s like one of the most fun invitationals we have all year,” said Dinh. “I feel pretty confident; I feel like we’re going to be Sunset League champions again on all levels.”
