Relay for Life, a 24-hour community fundraiser for cancer, will be coming to FVHS this weekend, hosted by the American Cancer Society and supported by on-campus club HACAS (Health and Cancer Awareness Society).
Each year, Fountain Valley hosts a Relay for Life event, similar to fundraisers ACS (American Cancer Society) hosts across the nation, to raise money to honor cancer survivors and remember those who have been lost, and support cancer research. According to HACAS records, provided by HACAS President Shea Snyder (‘14), the FV community was able to collect over $38,000 last year (a figure that was confirmed by an ACS representative).
Snyder said, “We fundraise money beginning months prior to the event by asking people we know to donate and by hosting our own smaller fundraisers.”
“The donations we collect go to the American Cancer Society to help cancer patients in many ways,” Snyder said.
FVHS HACAS has been working hard fundraising for the past few months, making personal requests and hosting fundraisers like car washes to kick off the event. At the actual race, the club will have a team that will participate in the relay, and they will simultaneously host a “Kids’” Booth.
“We are going to have coloring activities and other crafts to keep younger kids entertained at the event,” said Snyder. “Surrounding the booth will be information to educate the kids and their parents all about childhood cancers including; leukemia, lymphoma, and brain cancer.”
Relay for Life will be held from May 17 to May 18 at the FVHS track. To donate or volunteer, contact any HACAS member for more details. HACAS will also be hosting a car wash to raise funds for cancer research; stop by the Mobil at Brookhurst and Warner on Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to show your support.
