Girls tennis faced a loss against Los Alamitos on Thurs. with a score of 7-11. The girls played hard, but were unable to keep up with the consistency and stamina of the highly ranked Griffins.

“[Los Alamitos] have a very even team, so many rank players,” said head coach Harshul Patel. “We got Hanh [Pham] and Katherine [Nguyen], but they got six Hanhs, so it makes it difficult when you compare six versus two.”

Constantly defeating their opponents, freshmen duo Hanh Pham (’18) and Katherine Nguyen (’18) continued to win all their singles matches. During the last match especially, Nguyen continued to fight a long battle without showing any signs of easing up on her power. Playing against a difficult player, she was able to triumph with a score of 6-3.

“She was a good player so I had to play a long match, but I think fighting really hard on that last match was really good for me and my team,” said Nguyen.

Doubles team Giao Phan (’16) and Tia Wheelock (’15) played together for the first time and found difficulty being able to win their first two matches. However, they were able to better their communication and win their final match with a close score of 7-5. With the team in the midst of solidifying their double teams, this match up may lead to a road of victory.

Wheelock said, “I think just us knowing that they’re so good, we put in our minds that we’re not going to do well so we get the disadvantage from that … in the end they’re good players, but they’re not crazy good.”
