The boys varsity basketball team triumphed in their first league home game against Marina, last Friday. The game was a decisive victory for the team with a final score of 63-54.

The game also brought in many students from Fountain Valley to support their team and consistently cheer them on.

With various wins and losses for the Barons so far this season, they continue to keep up their hard work and push to do better every game.

Player James Phillhower (’16) stated that their team aims to achieve not just wins, but an overall improvement in their skills.

Phillhower said, “Victory is accomplished competing against yourself to do your best and make your best better while wins are just about the scoreboard.”

The team this year is not just focused on winning every game, but improving in every game. The players use losses as a driving force to do better and wins as a support to their effort.

The team this year also finds their strength in how well they bond. Player Luke Jacobsen (’15) talks of how the team shares great chemistry and focuses on basketball and each other to help improve their overall success.

“Growing up I’ve never had a brother, but with these group of guys I have 17 brothers who always have my back and I will always have theirs. This brotherhood has improved our team chemistry and will be a big advantage for us going to the start of league,” said Jacobsen.

The team’s communication as a whole has and continues to improve in this season. Team captain Ryan Fusco (’15) states that one of the team’s strong points this year is working together and especially communicating on defense.

Shortly after the game, the school put on a Pack the Gym dance. Students attending the dance had to be present at the boys’ game by 7:30 p.m. to be able to gain entrance into the dance, following the game. The dance was exclusively for Fountain Valley students and included an 80’s workout clothes theme, with students dressing up to fit the style.

Morgan Felix (’16)  said, “It’s nice to see the students come out and cheer on our team. I also really liked the theme 80’s workout…All in all, it was a great night!”
